Speedo/Odometer Not Working - MOT Due

Speedo/Odometer Not Working - MOT Due

by Gunnsie » Wed May 24, 2017 8:56 am
Hi All,

My Speedo and Odometer stopped working a little while back... I've just noticed the Kilometers noted for the MOT last year is the same as what it reads now (I haven't done loads of kilometers this year, possibly 200KMs)... The MOT is due in June... would this be an MOT failure?

Would anyone know what the problem could possibly be and is it easy to fix?

Cheers

Does the Speedometer indicate Speed?
MOT manual says...
6.7 Speedometer
Information
This inspection applies to all vehicles first used on or after 01 October 1937.

If the dial glass is cracked, it is not a Reason for Rejection, providing:
there is no possibility of misreading the speedometer or
there is no possibility fouling of the indicator needle or
the cracked glass does not create a safety hazard.

A Tachograph is an acceptable alternative to a speedometer providing it satisfies the requirements of this inspection.
Method of Inspection
1. Check that a speedometer is fitted.

2. Check the condition of the speedometer.

3. Check that the speedometer can be illuminated.
Reason for Rejection
1. Speedometer not fitted.

2. Speedometer incomplete, clearly inoperative or the dial glass broken or missing.

3. The speedometer cannot be illuminated.

Cheers.

No the speedo doesn't show the speed (I've had to rely on an iPhone App to make sure I didn't go through any cameras at speed).
The glass is in perfect condition.
The Tach is easily readable.
It still illuminates at night.

I think it must just be a case of something has become disconnected somewhere.

IT could be the cables not working: either snapped or popped out of the drive end. Check the dust cap on one front wheel (cannot remember which) it'll have a square hole in it which should have a speedo cable poking through held in place by a circlip of split pin. If there is nothing holding it in poke it back through and secure it. If it is still there it could be a nomen cable. Good luck. Dave

Cheers Dave... I'll try and get her up in the air over the weekend and see if there is anything obvious lurking.

First stop is take the hubcap off and check the end of the cable is located properly. You can do that with the wheels on the ground

Mine didn't work (Tacho and odometer) for three years and never failed an MOT. Whether or not it should have is another matter!
I'd check the back of the speedo as well, make sure it's screwed in. Might be an easy fix

Not an MOT failure...when I told my tester not working he said doesn't matter....and since they don't road test anymore not really any chance of them noticing...?

Hi All,

I have finally had time to get the bus out and have a look at the hub and behind the speedo and everything looks fine. I had a fiddle around with the cable behind the speedo and it feels like its attached well...... so I still have no idea why the speedo isn't working.

Anyone else got anymore ideas at all?

Cheers.

So...
Last check is to unscrew the end off the back of the speedo and position it so someone else can check/ see (whilst you are driving!) at the open end that the inner is actually turning so should be driving the speedo round. It should be OK.. but best to check before you seek to replace or repair..

I had this one repaired by Thorsten because the inner drive was chewed.
Mine on left.. replaced by item in right.
