Pertronix dizzy

Pertronix dizzy

by Karl_F » Mon Sep 11, 2017 8:32 am
Anyone had or seen any corrosion issues with a Pertronix billet dizzy before? Only been in use for 6 months & not open to the elements.

Bottom image shows underside of weight & probably cause of hesitation of weights sticking.

My views on these dizzies and their coils are not printable. I say this from several instances of them failing (not in my vehicles) and me having to replace them with proper VW parts.

Yes, pretty common. Often the springs rust away then it screws the timing up.

Why have you got unequal springs on the weights?

The usually come with three sets of equal springs.

Changing the springs effects the advance, so sort that and it should improve the engine response.

That's how it was factory set Jim, according to Pertronix that's correct. Personally I think it should be 2 silver/medium springs.

Yeh, mine says it comes installed with 2 silver springs installed, but it has a copper & silver from the factory. Pertronix customer service is vague & reasonable unhelpful at the best of times with limited answers to any query. I've got a replacement on its way & I'll start with 2 silver, although I'm tempted to buy another 123.

Out of curiosity, I'd set the two springs equally before its removed. Just to see the difference in feel.

Definitely follow the instructions vs how it arrived, as that's just assuming the person banging the springs in all day was bothered about doing to correctly.

I know there are fake ones even fake 6al boxes.
But OG disrtibutors had rust problemes as well.

since 2009 all msd distributors have the new yellow zinc coating that should stop this rust issue on them.
