Did the kit come with a colour-coded wiring diagram?

If not, look here... https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiringt2.php

Once you have a diagram, get a couple of rolls of masking tape and a pen. Label each of the connections with tabs of masking tape. Group connections together based on where they go (wires to go to the speedo pod, wires to go to the fuse box, wires to go to the left lights, right lights etc.).

Then start plugging them in, one group at a time.

Eat the elephant one bite at a time.

Who did you buy the loom from?
I have bought from Peter Good and he makes looms with correct colour coding and excellent diagrams.
Need to say who supplied and year and hand maybe someone has one and has the diagram.
One major puzzle is to trial fit the fuse box to the bracket to see that it comes in from the back? and then wire it up...

Peter's Excel diagram is very good....
On multiple sheets..
First mistake often made is that It is on several sheets!
Sheet by sheet!
If you also print out the vw diagram as well and do it in stages.. you will get the hang of it!

I just did it on my ‘65 as well.
As said label eveything first,it is alot easier to connect then when the loom is in the bus.
When it is not labeld it is harder to see what is what when the loom is in the bus.
I found the hardest thing to get al the wires a little bit descent.
Have not connect the battery yet so can not tell yet how many fuses got blown with my first attemp. 😜

I first layed everything open on a big piece off cardboard and try to imitate the bus.
So the you have a good view where everthing has to go and you can label it.

If you think of it as a road map of roads to exciting places..
and explore each new area in turn till you have got the hang of who lives in which house...

lol

Gerald
Was it you I bought the cargo door handle from?

My personal tips from when I did mine, maybe useful maybe not...

Make sure you have your fuse box the right way up and that you’ve understood how that relates to the diagram - the VW diagram is opposite way up to how you think it’s going to be when you’re looking at it. You can tell if you’ve got it right because one of the corner connections has a multiple piggy back on it - so that’s the one with all the wires going to it on the diagram.

Start with the fuse box as it’s big, it’s in the middle and it’s obvious. Then do the ignition as that’s the rest of your big thick red ones sorted.

Then sort the headlights as they’re easy to identify bundles and once you’ve got one side the other is obvious. That’s most of your yellow and white done.

Then attack the other bits one by one - fuel gauge, wipers etc, making sure each one is well earthed to the dashboard either by its clamp or by a separate wire.

Indicator switch and relay are confusing so do them second to last.

Dash pod lights are the most confusing as everything’s black and it daisy chains around all over the place so do that last.

Good luck, take your time and go and do another job or have a cup of tea if it gets confusing - often something clicks in your head when you come back to it later.
