Flap return spring - too long ?

Flap return spring - too long ?

by JonnyCJ » Mon May 28, 2018 9:29 am
My VW OG correct part number return spring seems to be too long for my dog house actuator rod.

The holes for the spring on my OG tin appear to be in the correct place, so a bit confused as to why the spring is too long.

It’s no problem to re-drill the actuator rod but thought I’d ask before drilling !

Any ideas ?

Cheers

Jonny

Have you got it in the right hole on the fan housing. That hole looks to big, like it's for the closing tin around the cooler.

Found this image, can’t tell from your picture if you’ve got it connected to the right place.

It’s definitely the right hole, next to the screw for the dog house to casing tin.

Oh well, it’s the correct tension, so will re-drill and set up once everything goes back on.

No great shakes, but I don’t like things not going back exactly as Mr VW designed.

Thanks for the replies !

Have you got the bar on the right way round? It’ll fit both ways but won’t move sideways the one way?

That could be it, as the kink in the bar in your photo is below the spring hole, but looks straight in the other photo.

This is what mine looked like. My shroud is aftermarket but the flaps and linkage bar are original.

The doghouse shroud has three linkage bars as in my photo - two shorter ones for the two sets of flaps and one long one to link those two.

The non-doghouse shroud has a single bar like yours, except yours looks like it has bigger kinks in it to accommodate the extra depth needed to clear the doghouse of the fan shroud?

Think there’s 3 different flap link rods Jon.

Non-doghouse
Doghouse
Doghouse with separate thermostat link bars

I have the second one, looks like you have the third.

Will do some more research....

Aha, of course there are more variations than I first thought, it wouldn’t be splitscreen restoration otherwise
