Barndoor and Wolfsburg Busses - Convert Running lights to Brake Lights

Barndoor and Wolfsburg Busses - Convert Running lights to Brake Lights

by hoss » Thu Mar 14, 2019 12:27 am
Hey guys,

I have a '54 kombi that I'm getting road ready. Living in a high traffic area I am worried about the visibility of a single brake light on the deck lid. I don't want to run another brake light in the rear window, but would prefer to turn the running lights into brake lights also.

Are there any dual filament bulb holders for barndoors or wolfsburg busses or some sort of conversion?

Thanks.

- jacin

P.S. I am in California and I'm sorry about our President.

These convert the bulb holder to a twin filament also improve the brightness of the light.

On my 56, I've used this to have tail lights, 3x brake lights and indicators

This is perfect and brilliant. Exactly what I was looking for! Thank you!

One question.. the Taillight conversion.. these are sold individual or as a pair?

Just want to know before I put in my order.

No problem. I wanted indicators on the rear of a semaphore bus years ago, so came up with the control box. Then the other items evolved from there.

The come as a pair. I've changed the listing to make that a bit clearer. Thanks.

I used some LED boards from http://www.dynamoregulatorconversions.com/

I’m not sure they’ve ended up as bright as Jim’s conversion and required me to modify the original light housings slightly so not a plug and play solution.

I’ve got orange flashing as well as the red though which was what I wanted to achieve. When red or orange half alone are lit they bleed into the whole light housing. When both are lit they light their half and meet in the middle.

I think your 62 was origionally a Euro light wired bus with a loom that already fed dual filament bulbs.
Did the bulb holders in the rear lights you have fitted come with twin filament rear light bulb holders?
The forum poster hoss has an early bus with single filament bulb holders and centre rear brake light.
8bus's SC has 1960 dual filament bulb holders n trafficatirs and he has used Jim's traficator n rear lights gizmo. He is pleased that he now has front indicator bulbs concealed in his headlights like US models as well.
The mods vwjim is selling update the earlier trafficator centre brake light single filament set up well.

Yes mine is a 62 bus so is wired for Euro lights with separate indicator. I think I’ve got a separate wire in my loom for running them as 61 lights if I want to but I haven’t used it and couldn’t tell you off the top of my head how it works.

I have 61 lights so I presume they would take a dual filament bulb as standard but I’ve not run them like that I converted them before refitting.

Hey Jim. I'm am going to install the kit this weekend.. but had a couple of questions.

1) What type of connectors do people typically use when installing the box? Splice connectors? Or is there just a typical spade type connector with a 3-way adapter?

2) Is there a higher res diagram available? I'm using the one off of the order link ( http://www.vwjim.co.uk/ourshop/prod_120 ... x-Kit.html) but its does not print well obviously.

3) Where do most mount the control box? I presume near the fuse block in the nose.

4) For the Left Side Tail light, do most run that down the same path as the main harness?

Thanks super excited!

If anybody wants to see the BD I'm installing on you can find it on my instagram @hoss_vw
