Cab door hinge pins removal - I made a tool !!!

Cab door hinge pins removal - I made a tool !!!

by Campo » Sun Jul 15, 2007 8:46 pm
I am as smug as a smug person who has just won first prize in a smugness contest :D :D :D

I tried all the usual ways to remove the cab door hinges so I could fit my 'proper' side mirrors (except heat as I did not want to damage paint work any more) with no success.

Finally came up with this :

Its a modified ball joint splitter tool (had to hide it from the missus as she threatened to use it on me if I spent anymore time in the garage 8O )

The 'forked' end has been ground flat and the 'bolt' end has also been ground out to get the tool to fit over the hinge.

I also had to grind the diameter of the pin to fit in the hinge pin hole.

Basically works like splitting ball joints, the 'fork' end fits around the top of the hinge pin and the threaded pin pushes hinge pin from underneath.

Mirrors are now fitted complete with authentic vibration, even with 'harp' arms. 8) 8)

Anyone want to borrow it let me know

Whoa!

I was just about to start a thread on 'any other methods of removing stuck pins (other than Mike1973's suggestion of 'plenty o' WD40 and a lump hammer') and came across this one!

I tried a similar approach with a small clamp but the thread part started to bend!

how do you get the device to sit under the pin if its all the way home and you can't budge it?

:?

Took a picture to show how I used the tool (on the bottom hinge cause I've already removed the top hinge pins):

Did it without taking the door off

The hinge pin did not sit fully through the hole so it was straight forward to locate the bolt/pin of the tool in the hinge against the bottom of the pin.

Mart No problem

Just PM your address and I'll send it to you, just send it back when you've finished with it with a couple of quid to cover postage.

Not looking to make any money out of this just glad to help out.

I'd love to borrow this as I have a hinge pin on the nearside and no mirror..

It does look like it will damage the paint though without 'protection'

I did scuff the top of my hinge a little, first one was worse than the second as I got used to using it.

Mirror arm covers up the worst of it, however my bus has lots of 'character' in the bodywork so its not too noticeable, strategically placed piece of rubber under the forked end would probably do the trick.
