Great thread, I'm definitely joining the flash tape revolution..

I spent a fortune on 'Silent Coat' noise insulation for my last bus, will be interesting to see (or hear) how good old flash tape compares..

Thanks Dean

Just a thought,If i used flash tape and silent coat would it make much of a difference to the noise in the van or am i better off just using the one.On the other hand would it be to bulky if it was used together on the floor with the wooden boarding and vinyl matting?

Great pictures and looks a superb job.It looks as though you used flash tape and silent coat,Am i correct? How do you now find the difference?Did you keep a cost of all the materials and how much you used?

I fitted the whole bus out with flash tape (2 layers over the engine) and then covered the whole bus with thermawrap insulation from screwfix: http://www.screwfix.com/p/thermawrap-lo ... tAodGxgAfQ

Flash tapes a good bit thinner than silent coat so I would recommend doubling up the layers if you want the same results. I had the bus out at the weekend and it seems a bit quieter but don't have any door/interior panels fitted yet so it's hard to get a true comparison. I also fitted a thin layer of laminate floor underlay on the cargo floor and rear engine area as I had some in the garage, might be a bit overkill but it's was free so can't complain! I've still to do the front cab area which made a massive difference on my last bus when it was fitted out with silent coat.

Think I've spent around £150 on materials.

After reading the earlier thread on this topic a couple of years ago I used the roof flashing method...

check out this 20 second clip on youtube to see the difference it made on the side doors

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJMI5YduqAs

I've covered the sides and over the engine bay too. Hopefully on the road this summer to see if it's quieter

[amazing thread, guys!]

My personal summary for the thread is further below, but I have a new question plus an old one - just to be sure:

Q1: If I was considering in the nearish future a bare-metal respray and hence sandblasting, how easy does the flashing come off? Should I even be concerned about the inside?

Q2: Are you absolutely sure the tape doesn't smell on the engine bay? Mine does get rather toasty when the engine has been running at 100ish degrees for a couple of hours on a long run!

I've studied this thread and come to the same obvious conclusions that my van needs to be BOTH sound-deadened AND insulated using 2 different methods.

I'm therefore a believer of the Screwfix 'flashing tape' method, doubling-up different widths over the engine and floor - using a tough roller. (Still checking the Aquaseal brand for the roof, though) For insulation, I didn't fancy using e.g. a batten framework around a dense foam mat for insulation and so instead I am instead opting for a 'double insulation' shiny-sheet-type product that can be used everywhere - including over the windows if I chop it about neatly:

http://www.screwfix.com/p/airtec-double ... -25m/50913

(The above covers a massive 37.5m2 has a medium insulation score and beats the other Screwfix products by double - Thermawrap or Super quilt - in terms of cost/m2/insulation efficiency)

Sound deadening paint seemed a little too variable in terms of depth and also a bit messy & irreversible? The cab doors, cab roof, under the front seats PLUS on the cab floor seemed like a good idea to do as well. I couldn't see a reason NOT to do the cab floor since it doesn't need welding unless someone has fallen down a potential unforeseen trap?

Cheers - Craig

Great summary post there! :)

I was just thinking about which option to go for in terms of insulation, the rigid polystyrene or the shiny double sided bubble wrap type? There seems to be a few options of the later on eBay but not sure how they compare with the screwfix one you have listed?

Eg; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-2m-X-25m-30 ... 43abdad225

The only (very minor) 'downside' to using the shiny double sided bubble wrap type, appears that you need some sort of tape to fix it in place?

Looking really tidy, what carpet is that that you've used, and how have you bonded it to the floor and bulkhead. Is it glued to a ply backing and screwed in place, or glued directly to the flashing tape? Also how do the edges hold up?

The 'Blau' Bus is my second bus thats getting the flash tape treatment. The first Bus got two layers of flashing tape inside each panel and the voids were filled with polystyrene sheeting.
This time I'm doing two layers of flashing tape (for sound deadening) again but filling the voids with 25mm celotex (for insulation)

When I refit the ply floor I plan to put a layer of flashing tape to the underside. The cargo floor will need replacing in a few years so better to put it on the underneath of the ply floor me thinks.

Thinking about doing this to the van and got a couple of questions

dubberdean - what did you use to etch and seal the paint before you stuck the flashing down

and

which product is the best, the one from screwfix, the evo-stick one or the aquaseal product (which is a little bit more expensive)

and

wheres the cheapest place to get the products from

sorry just being lazy and as this thread has been going on for years people have already done the searches

ill be doing everywhere apart from the roof

Cheers

I used an etch primer followed by http://www.frost.co.uk/automotive-paint ... paint.html

The only thing I'd recommend is using the flashing tape that doesn't advise additional adhesive. Aquaseal I think was the best product a the time but that was several years ago now!

Answering an earlier question, no it definitely does not smell over the engine bay, yes it does stay stuck to the roof!

People asking about thermal insulation, the rigid foam insulation such as kingspan, celotex or standard polystyrene will be better than the foil backed bubble wrap but not by a lot to be fair.

Be interesting though, Ben has just 'flash taped' his bus at a fifth of the price. Be interesting to hear the difference!
Fifth of the price and I'd be willing to bet it performs twice as good. Not to say that I wouldn't use dynamat if money was no object but I'd need twice as much for the same noise insulating properties.

I reckon Ben's use of flashing tape and celotex is a fantastic combo. That's going to be a pleasure to drive and live in.
