best splitscreen manual / book ????

by tom black » Tue Aug 03, 2010 7:53 pm
hi all,

any suggestions for a good splitty technical manual to buy. Im only aware of the Hanes book but would be interested to hear if anyone has come across anything good? Someone mentioned an old American 70's vw splitty/bettle book but I forgot the name of it, any one know?

cheers

quite a few good ones about, some are a personal preference. The one you refer to above is, i think, John Muirs How to keep your VW alive. it covers both bugs and buses; its OK but personally i find his style of writing a little difficult to follow.

one of the better ones i have is a brown book titled VW Transporter Owners Wokshop Manual, its very good.

theres also a CD containing a copy of the Bentley manual available from SSVC club shop for about a tenner. Most people say this is the best one.

thanks for that.

so is the general thinking the Benley manual is the best option? I would say my mechanical level is advanced beginer !!! Is the bentley manual easy to understand?

I have a 71 brazilian splitty, but most things mechanically seem exactly the same as my mates german bus.

How do you get hold of the cd for a tenner from SSVC??

I've got a "Bentley Workshop Manual Volkswagen Transporter 1963 - 1967" VW Part No LPV 800 135 Bentley Stock No V267 ISBN 0-8376-0391-9.

My partner bought me it as a surprise present when I first bought "Madge" (my 67 Aussie Split) I think she got it from Amazon for about £75 (The book that is - not Madge !) Its a very comprehensive manual & certainly gets my thumbs up.

I also have a couple of other books which are very good:

"Owners Service Manual Volkswagen Station Wagons and Trucks"
copyright 1964 Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft - printed in Germany (but in English)
There's no ISBN or Part No on this book

"36 HP & 40 HP Volkswagen Transporters Workshop Manual"
Scientific Publications Melbourne Australia
(bought this one because its an Aussie publication & I have an Aussie bus - thought there
may be information relevant to Aussie splits but its very similar to the book above)
Theres no ISBN or Part No on this book

Bought both of these books off ebay

Regards

Wowsa,

A google search resurrected this old thread. I know bus prices have gone haywire of late, but look at the manual :-) - http://www.play.com/stores/PlayFastMedi ... /995722507

Just having a looksie around to see what would be best for my 59 panel van with a 1600 engine. Suggestions on a postcard welcome :-)

Heyho, Shane
