http://www.vwoc.euromarques.com/serial_ ... s.htm#Type 2 (Vans, Busses, Trucks etc.) 1st August 1964 to 31st July 1979

1st August 1964 to 31st July 1969 Chassis (VIN) Numbers were nine digits built up of three identification digits plus six serial number digits
First digit defines the vehicle type, i.e. 2 Type 2 (Van based products)
Second digit defines the model, i.e. 1 delivery van, 2 Micro Bus, 3 Kombi, 4 Micro Bus Deluxe, 5 Micro Bus Deluxe 7 seater LHD, 8 Pickup, 7 Ambulance, 8 also Micro Bus.
Third digit defines the production year, i.e. 5 (1965) between 1st August 1964 and 31st July 1965.

Hi,

I am new to the Split Screen world and have purchased a South African import 13 window.

Can someone please explain the chassis plate please, as reading below it seems to be odd?

The number on the log book is 234BEA001223

As far as I know the SA buses do not follow the normal rules for Chassis numbers as they were made in knock down form in Germany and only assembled in SA, same as their paint codes being a law unto themselves..

Hopefully someone will have more info on this, would be good to know...

Thanks HKP,

Does this mean the SA spilts are significantly lower quality than other kombi's built in Gernmay, if so I guess this would affect the value?

All the documentation states the bus as a 1967, and I have written to the importer to verify this but got no response as yet.

I would not have thought so, it is german metal at the end of the day, made in RHD and normally had a (fairly) rust free existence compared to other RHD market vehicles, all win win in my books... You do get a few oddities in the panels, apparently mine has different (earlier?) door handle recesses and semaphores on a '60 model, but it all adds to the story :) .

Fingers crossed you get a reply from the importer. Alternatively, have you tried to apply for a birth certificate from VW? maybe that would help??

At some time they set up a pressing plant as well and developed from CKD to locally pressed items. With CKD there were variations on the level of local content . Governments wanted to encourage investment in making locally so that they develop local skills. Examples being Australian CKD and glass and instrumentation with the kangaroo logo etc.

Will it state it's a 13 window bus?
Please do not say count the windows?

Type it in here and see what you get, if it had 13 windows it will say so.
