CSP Gear Shifter ????

CSP Gear Shifter ????

by berpsta » Wed Mar 07, 2012 12:05 pm
Ok so finally got the gearbox back in my bus yesterday so thought id fit the new CSP shifter thats been sat in a box a good while
upon removing the old shifter i thought the ball on the end looked a bit big compared to the one on the CSP but i know i have ordered a CSP shifter for a 1960 bus so not to worry i thought.... upon fitting the shifter is shifted gear but hit the dash so i tried sliding the whole unit back this resulted in inability to shift gear and find neutral..... and well it all feels like the shifter is moving way before its engaging the shift rod .....

the 2 shifters side by side

old shifter 18mm flat base ball bit 20mm across

CSP shifter 12mm flat base ball bit 15mm across
does this mean i could have possibly the wrong front shift rod in my bus??? im thinking my bus maybe has the 1959-1962 one fitted when maybe it should be the 1955-1959 one
Image
im a tad confused???
anybody shed any light on this??

hi Sean
when I fitted berg the ball bigger than standard.

so csp should be the same size, but lots of year changes. good luck :(

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=190619

might help...everything I have read it is a nightmare!

differences..obvious is the shifter position early near seat/later near dash..also the straight and bent shifter linked to this position

...then ball size

...then distance between ball and floor

....I think there is a random combination of most/all the above  not to mention 50 years of POs changing things :drunken:

^^^ cheers for that well ive stripped out the front shift rod this is what i found
Image
the spring steel style hold down which from what ive been reading about over on thesamba alot instead of the nylon bush that you get supplied with as a replacement
but it looks like its the wrong shift rod due to the cup size
Image
so ive checked back on CSP website to see what year there shifters fits dates are
50-60
61-65
66-67
68-79
Has anybody got any measurements of the bottom of a CSP shifter for 61-65 & 66-67 bus please

cheers

I have a 1959 RHD and mine looks just like that set up in your photo with the M-Sprint and Shifter Rod.
