steering lock...how does it work
by splitty61 » Thu Apr 18, 2013 7:12 pm
hi guys,
its a daft question but how does the steering lock work on a split?is it part of the ignition key unit....i.e is it a case of turning the steering wheel until it locks and to unlock put the ignition key in to release the lock.
many thanks
rob

I'm afraid you're right ...and wrong. Yes it was an option but it IS linked to the ignition. It does both, just like my wife's golf. And it certainly is original. And yep maddison, factory 12v and 2 speed wipers too.

It was an option which could be fitted (I believe as a dealer fitted option)
There are several on thesamba.com for sale which are period. Most seem broken at the moment.
They were fitted for your year and you could get an authentic period item but expect to pay around $400 at the prices I have seen.

for example
Z5 Technical Bulletin from 1961!

They're completely different to mine. Seems like they perfected it cos mine is a more integral part of the column.
If you think they're rare and expensive you should see how much the trip speedo fitted to the Arco is worth

Modern version fitted to an older bus... bolts up through the column mounting up into the speedo pod and a bolt into the dash tray/back of the speedo pod I think.
Has all the same switch controls as your ordinary lock - works just like your modern car column lock.
This is a Brazilian lock which is available from several sellers...as fitted onto Bay window buses to a Neiman design.
Key positions in Spanish? i think..
If the owner recognises it and objects, I will remove the picture. EDIT Owner has had fitted a push button ignition because the ignition on the column lock failed (broken lug?) EDIT
Neiman lock plate with positions in German. Neiman NOS available but expensive!
Have to take off steering wheel, column etc and cut hole in outer tube and weld retaining lugs on inner colum.
Quite a simple practical solution really if you are restoring anyway...

Maybe could use the redundant hole for a secondary immobiliser system?

I Have one of these 74s however the electrical mech on the oposite side where key fits is missing, if this can be of use to anyone then a good offer would be accepted, sorry to jump on post.
