For the attention of anyone with a Tracker....
by vwJim » Thu Oct 11, 2012 4:50 pm
Following the recent theft of the bus with a tracker fitted, it reminded me that if you call Tracker up, they can do a PING test of your system to make sure its currently working and not reporting any faults etc.
Plus, they often fail / need a services after 5 years but Tracker don't contact you if the unit goes down, its down to you to check with them and book their engineer to service it. So well worth a yearly call to make sure its working.

Yes Jim
It pays to have a service, keep it all up and working currently working as you say

I'm looking to getting Tracker fitted on my new bus, how badly does it drain the battery over the winter when the bus isn't running? Or is it not a problem?

That is music to my ears, I'm picking up my first camper this weekend and of course, I'm totally paranoid about loosing it. Mainly down to reading posts by you Sooty actually
Which level of tracker do you think's best, quite like the one with VHF & GPS too so I can see it on my phone, but its quite expensive.

Anything that works via a SIM card can be blocked with a 20 quid device...

How much are the trackers that operate non sim, I take it you pay for the unit and then a monthly fee ?

I've looking at one called 'tracker'
250 to have it installed and an annual fee of £99. That's aVHF one that can't be blocked. You tell them as soon as you discover it's stolen an they track it and alert bizzies. You can't see it on your computer or have it alert you if it's moved unless you upgrade to the next one which is £179 a year and a bit more for the install.

With Tracker, you can pay more initially and not pay a yearly fee if the vehicle is a 'keeper'

And the sim needs a reception just like a mobile phone, if the vehicle is in a dead spot it can't be detected

I'm a bit confused. GPS is not linked to a SIM. Location based on cell tower (i.e. via a SIM) is not very accurate... Do the cheap signal blockers block cell coverage or GPS?
Also, does Skytag use GPS or a SIM?

You can get blockers for either GPS and GSM. Both are illegal... You can probably get combo ones as well
Most GPS trackers send the information via the GSM network

Just had one fitted to mine that doesn't use GPS so is apparently a bit more difficult to block.
