'63 Turkis Kombi build.

by sinclair » Sat Feb 21, 2015 7:47 pm
Day one of my latest project. I wasn't after a project this time but I just couldn't resist! The spec so far.....
Early '63 Turkis Kombi walk through. Mostly original steel and paint. What has been done is to a very high quality and rolling all 4 wheels on wishbone suspension and discs. So looking forward to building my ultimate bus at last! :D

That's a nice clean, straight bus, looks like someone has done lots of work already.
What's it like underneath??
Cheers,
Dom.

Hi Dom. You're still here too!
Yes body's been straightened out, floor halves and new sills fitted (leaded)
Underneath is great but could do with painting.

That was my first thought, but it's really only a rolling shell and there's some back tracking to do yet to get it how I want it. And when I price up the parts needed it's frightening 8O

The little bits add up don't they, but it's a cracking looking bus and an original paint small hatch walk-through isn't going to come up every day.

Had a quick recenoiter today. Missing a drivers screen and passenger sliding glass. First job really is to fit all new glass and door seals.
Took the seats to my local blaster so I can paint them before they go for trimming. I've ordered some heated seat matrix blankets to fit during the reupholstery, well you live and learn and I've learnt that I cant wait for the dear old heat exchangers! :) under seat area in great condition.

Also have to admit to being an obsessive polisher... What's left of the Turkis paint holds a great shine.

Petrol tank off to paint shop for some grey blue paint too. So things are moving on. Considering I have another project on the go too, my old '75 bug having a body off birthday.... For the last 2 years!

Next BIG decision is whether to paint the underside, or not. It's very good original paint but I'm building this to keep for a change.

If I do it now's the time to get it back on a rotisserie  .

Hi matey. Looks like you've got yourself another good one there. Maybe catch up sometime (Brighton) if I'm allowed anywhere near with a non standard 11 window bus not painted in its original colour with deluxe beltline trim and a water cooled Ford engine

Hey Neo!
Brighton definitely. Just checked up on Ruby. Fantastic! Always the innovator it's good to see it still evolving. Was thinking about your double pod dash just the other day??? Makes my Kombi look boring.

Obsessive polisher strikes again.

Looking great so far mate and love the heated seat idea! Need those for ours me thinks...

I would definitely paint the underside at this stage, for peace of mind. Even if you dont drive it in the winter, the underside will take a beating and with og paint there wont be a huge amount of protection. We get plenty of rain even in the summer and stonechips take their toll!

Back on a rotisserie at Dr Fredinands for underside and engine bay repainted. Decided against using stone chip so it's getting etch primer and good old cellulose for a more original look.
