First time project 66 Oregon
by jasonjleach » Sat Oct 24, 2015 6:05 am
Hello there! Today's the day the strip down starts on my 66. I've been looking to get something since dubfreeze 15, watching the samba, eBay etc as the prices continue to rise. After I lost a few buses in the US of A I found this in Graham FBI's garage and did the deal. Nice honest guy. If you head down to see his stock, watch for the speed cameras on the mumbles!
Now the garage junk is sorted ( why do we buy so much stuff and not use it?) the strip down starts later.
Been watching lots of threads on here and look forward to learning the ropes.
For the record my target is Camperjam 17.
Here she is as bought.....
Barn find, not on the road since 1979 when I was 7!

Welcome to owning a money pit but dam fun when done and living the dream. Rustys and mark p 's threads are great for areas your unsure of & for me is like a building bible.
I've just stripped mine & got a busy winter ahead as plan to use it again next year.
Learn the ropes you said just remember lots of pics or they get restless. Enjoy your cave time.

Cool an Oregon bus!! I live in Oregon so I'll be watching this one. Off the road since 79 you say, ha I was 2!! There's still some hidden gems here in the PNW, nice to see them get pulled out and put back on the road no matter what country they're in now
Here's my 62. This one was found being used for storage about 4 years ago and looking pretty sad, pulled it out and cleaned it up and welded in some new metal in a few areas and been on the road since.

Cheers guys. Tyzel do you know if it's possible to trace owners from the registration number? Pulled out a few Windows and put together a tool shopping list and pricing new metal. Also relocated my wood store, I now have by work bench. Start in earnest next weekend.

I don't believe the DMV here will hand out previous owners info based off the number plate. Do you have an old registration card or anything that may have they're name/address on it?

Not so much progress yet, had to move our wood store to make space for the work bench.
Also spent lots of time specing up a welder and compressor, now ordered!
Taken some windows out, looks good on the sides but the front will need a repair.
Also swapped over the buses to let me have a little more space.

So some progress today. Some more windows out, including a working pop out. Stripped the ply headliner and thankfully found no black widows! Got my new toys as well.
Also the guys at metal supermarket west brom are helpful. Much better than going to next!
Finally is there any way of getting the cab door Windows off? We and truly stuck. Tks

Cab door windows are secured by the two counter sunk screws shown in your pic with an Allen key drive. Two 13 bolts recessed in the front & two on the side. Then two 10mm nuts inside door skin tucked in at the top.

Spray plenty of penetrating oil the day before...
I have now stripped eight doors on almost all..but one...it was a struggle at best...
When you come to strip the frames assume you will shear the bolts. ..you will and drill out or replace...
You can get purchase with a big star drive screw driver with an AF spanner form on the shaft.. that worked for me..
The nuts onto the lower rail I sheared the bolts..and done..
Have fun..
