Ah i wondered where this went.
Looks very much like shiny OG vw grey primer you have under that green top coat. Was it not a primer delivered bus then?
Look forward to the updates, good luck with the resto.
Cheers
Mark

Looks to me like you have taken it back to the primer ?
The engine bay is a tell tale sign it was a primer bus as it has no sign of paint in there thats why it has surface rusted?

The Cab area (ie front panel, inside) is a better clue that this was a primer-delivered bus
This area normally got hit all over with body colour at the factory
It seems the engine bay was more of a top coat 'hit or miss' affair
I assume the factory 'primer' is not a primer as such. VW wouldnt send them out porous, would they?
Some sort of top coat quality?
Having it back to primer would be a bit boring?
At least save (mask) the door logos?
FWIW, I think I'd have kept the green, had the lower metalwork repaired, & blended. Scotty Style. More interesting, & bags of coolness

that is an easy project put some wheels on it and youre done
no, but seriously good luck with the resto, it will be worth it.
I was thinking about this bus, but didn`t get the money together in time.
Hey ho, story of my life
Oh yeah, for whats its worth i also really like the green, but hey its your bus.

Hi Steve,
My guess was looking at the colour and the dash area (Your dash and my 52's dash are almost identicle - thats a primer bus) it certainly looks like primer, the primer was a sort of semi matt, almost eggshell finish. It does buff up, it goes white when left in the sun and often rusty. It is all over inside and out coat and fairly thick looking, especially on the outside.
I guess it was only really designed as a delivery coat. On my 52 oneside was stripped back and part of the roof to the primer, i blended the side but left the roof. After 2 years it is now mainly surface rust.
A birth cert should confirm the colour as there were two greys too, listed as L21/L22 so it is possible its one of those.
If it is primer then my guess would be it will not last very long before the surface rust appears without a barrier coat of some description, especially given the paints age too.
Cheers
