My '67 Split Bus Resto Thread in the Philippines
by dongkg » Tue Jul 16, 2013 12:27 pm
Hello.
I have been into vws for many years now. Though I have been at thesamba for a couple of years, this is the very first time I have join this forum. I have bought a '67 Split bus last December 2012 and the following post may be abouti 6 months ago, nevertheless. I will post the developments of the restoration I am personally doing.
This is the 6th vee-dub to in my garage. A 1967 splitty. After a long wait, finally, I got one. Soon to be restored... Though this is my second Splitty.
The first one was about 20 years ago that I never got the chance to restore due to documentation and financial issues..
Thanks.
Dongkg
In the garage of the previous owner. The body was recently repaired.
Being towed to its new garage at our house.
There you go, hibernating in our garage with my other 5 vee-dubs. Our son is excited too..
Thanks,
Dongkg

(Taken about the first week of February 2013)
I installed the Fuchs on the bus. I removed it from my country buggy. I had the rear drums drilled to accept studs and the center hubs were modified to accommodate the Fuchs center hub and bolt patters. Although I still used the adapters up front. With how the front fuchs looks, I guess I also have to have the front drums modified and re-stud to accept the fuchs sans adapters.
By the way, we have a cool road test ran of our split. So so awesome and cool..
This is how it looks now:

(Taken about the part part of February and first week of March 2013)
I applied primer inside and outside of the bus.
This is how it looked like before the painting, although the inside and outside were thoroughly cleaned before applying the primer:
The painting process:
After the painting. These pictures were taken on Sunday, March 3, considering that I finished applying the painting at 7pm, Saturday which included the roof section.
On Sunday, March 3, I applied primer under both underneath the front fenders and both half side of the under chassis. Of course I cleaned these portions too.

I installed the hatch on the split and it fits better now and it's ready for the paint.
Still long way to go. I sanded the split that weekend.I had no sufficient time to do other works, the schedule is so hard, Me and my wife had to bring the kids to the malls..
Well, the panels, roof and every surface needs to the sanded some more..

This is the OZITO Mig Welder that I bought in Baguio City and to be used on Splitty. There are a few body works that needs to be addressed. I am trying my hand on the Mig Welder...

(taken about last week of March 2013)
Update:
I fixed some of the unfinished and hacked job of the PO, particularly the cargo area wherein two provisions of tools and other things were incorporated even if the same was not the original design.
This is on the left side:
After the same was removed:
These are the covers:
Using the MIG Welder:
Unfortunately, I ran out of MIG wires. I need to buy one. SO I was not able to weld it completely.

This is on the other side. Sorry for the pic:
I also welded some unfinished portions of the flooring.
I also finished some portions of the undercarriage:
The underneath of the front cab.
Middle portion of the undercarriage. Though I need to clean and paint the inner portion of the ladder frame.
Rear fender portion:
I also painted portions of the engine bay. Although I need to remove the engine in the future to have the engine bay painted completely.
I also painted the bumpers and rear apron and the frame of the middle seat:

(Note: taken during the first week of April 2013)
This long weekend. I applied the first coating of the sealing wax red. Although there are more things to be done.. I need to make some adjustments on the mixture of the Sealing wax red.. Long way to go...
The interior looks okay but, in reality, there are more portions that needs to be addressed. Long way to go.
I was too excited to drive the bus in the late afternoon. The kids joined me. It fun. That was after a long ordeal of sanding the panels to get that straight as possible.

(Note: taken about the second week of April 2013)
I went to the tire mounting shop and had the 215/65/15 (for the rear) and 165/65/15 (up front), tires installed on Splitty.
The 165/65/15 (up front) tire just wrapped onto the Fuchs.
A comparison of the 185/55/16 to the 165/65/15 tires. The latter tire look better (my opinion).
After the tires were installed, I parked Splitty at the nearby gas station. The Rear tires look pretty ballon and the front tires are quite thin and narrower. Although, there is still a need to have the suspensions lowered.
At the rear...
Up front...
Question:
Is this correct for the early bus adjusters? Thanks in advance.

I applied the Sealing Wax
Red under the chassis and applied some fillers and did a lot of block sanding. I also painted part of the engine bay, although the pics are still on my iPhone.
Thanks,
Dong
