Steve,
Not sure if you are aware but the speedo shown in your pic is from a Beetle & not an original Splitscreen unit.
Sorry if you already new or sorry if you didn't.
Regards.

Hi Peter,

As with everything to do with these Buses, I am still Learning!
I wasn't aware but now I am, along with a lot of other bits I have brought...then sold again!
The bus came with that speedo when I purchased it so I'm a little disappointed but I will keep my eyes open for the correct one.
Thanks for the heads up though. :D

Steve.

On lighter news I had some more bits turn up today for the project. 8)
Hope these are correct!

I`m afriad they are not Steve,

Oil bath filter is correct, but the complete bottom half bowl section of it (and the clips) are missing.

Door pulls are from a 1967 split - not correct for your bus (your bus didn`t have interior door pulls as it was intended that you use the interior handles to pull the doors shut - which is not possible on a 67 bus, hence the need for seperate door pulls)

Pop out catches are also incorrect - they should be long spoons. The ones you have are known as medium spoons and are used on the most forward facing pop out window on buses that had six pop outs.

Sorry bud :(

Is this bus a 6 pop out bus? It doesn't look like it to me, there are only hinges on the 3rd windows back. Those pop out catches are correct if it's only a 2 pop out window bus

The oil bath filter you have in the pic is complete, it is an early type, where the bottom bowl unscrews it does not have clips like the later types
I do not know what year they changed to the later ones. It will fit your 36hp engine.

Hmmm, in hindsight it probably would have been best if I had read all the pages rather than just the last page of this thread before replying (and properly looked at the pics of the bus and parts too with more than a fleeting glance...)

So Steve, to summarise again...

You are on a changeover year for engines (36hp - short production run early "b4stard" 40hp). John is totally correct, the aircleaner is comlpete and is correct for a 36hp motor. If it has a wingnut on the bottom (I cant see if it does in the pic) it`s a 55 to 56 type and if it doesn`t then its the 57-59 type. The change to the cliped type ones came in with the early 40hp "b4stard" motors.

Scotty is also right - if your deluxe was not ordered with the 6 pop out package then those "medium" catches are correct for the two rearward windows.

The pull handles - These are only correct for the late 66 and 67 model buses with the "flipper" type interior door handles. They were not fitted or produced in 59. However although they are not correct for your bus they will still fit if you want to use them to aid shuting the doors - as I have seen done many times before on early buses

Hi Steve,

are you sure your bus is a 59? Out of interest what is the chassis number?
I am wondering as I have a 59 and it came with semaphores, and the 40hp engine.
Your bus looks like a late 1960 to me, but I could be wrong.
Cheers,
Dom.

Hi Dom,

I have the Birth certificate and it states it is a 1959 deluxe.
There is also a request for front indicators over semaphores on the specification.
I also had a reply from the guy who I purchased the Oil bath from, and he said that it is a complete item with no missing clips or parts.
He gave me the VW Part numberer to check.

Sorry about that Steve, was trying to be helpful and due to not concentrating definitely partially failed on this occasion  :(

As a means of redeeming this I can tell you that the tailgate you have is definitly incorrect for a 59. it has the half moon indent and this is a 61-63 feature, but you could always cut this out and weld it up flat to save buying another tailgate.

As far as the motor goes (and dependent on how fussy you want to be) you should be able to find out from the chassis no whether the bus came with a 36hp or a early 40hp motor. As said the airfilter (if it has no wingnut underneath which would make it a 55-57 version) would be correct for a 59 36hp motor, but not for a 59 40hp motor - which would have had the clipped type previously mentioned.

If the bus was produced in late 59 then it would have more likely come with a b4stard 40hp - (that is what the early short production run 40hp motors are known as. They didn`t make them for long before changing the design to the later and more sucessful 40hp motors, but your bus definitely would not have had one of those later 40hp`s)

It`s a great bus, I look forward to watching its restoration 8)

Thanks again for all your comments. I reckon its better to be told now that a piece isn't right than when its finished.
I will get the indent in the tailgate sorted. Its another item that came with the van & its still got the VW/Audi sticker on it.
My bus was built in the last week of August 1959 so it should have an engine with the removable dynamo pedestal. but at the moment I have got the earlier engine serial no. 2901290 which I recon is about April 1959 & this makes the air filter correct as it hasn't got the wing nut on the bottom.
I am working on the principal that during this changeover period they would have had some of the earlier engines kicking about the factory to use up  but will be looking for one with serial no. around 3152700 if one comes up.
I often wonder how my bus, which isn't in bad nick as far as busses go, could have been completely stripped of its removable parts.
I can only think it was stripped then partly blasted & partly primed then sold on to its previous owner then myself leaving us to find so many parts to make it complete again.
Anyway, your initial comments certainly stirred up some interest in it & for that I am grateful.
