Just checked the carb, screw was almost fully in? Have screwed it out by 2.5x
Thanks, will try again later, I'm probably giving it to much juice when trying to fore it up.
Thanks again.
Jim
Fully in would be way too rich.
Have a look at VW Resource's page on carb tuning.
34 Pict 3 tuning
The idle mixture screw adjusts the amount of air in the mixture on one of these carbs. Screwing it in reduces the amount of air, so the mixture becomes richer. Almost fully in would be way too much fuel.
It does beg the question of why it was that far in though. If the engine has problem with air inleakage in to the manifold, then it might have been screwed in to deliberately overfuel to compensate for the uncontrolled air being sucked in after the carb.

Did you get anywhere with your starting and rough running problem?

Hi, No unfortunately not!!! Changed all the components, plugs, leads, dizzy, etc, Then timed it from 5ADTC to 7.5BTDC and everything in between.
It's coughing and spluttering as if it wants to go but We still no fire?
I had a friend have a look at it, said it was set up perfectly? Only thing we can think is that its possibly a carb issue, so he's taken it to have a look back at his garage. (VW people are very kind) Will let you know how we get on.
Thanks again
Jim

I had to ditch my carb and buy a reconditioned one because it had incurable air inleakage problems so I just couldn't tune it and the engine ran like a dog. The throttle spindle bushes were so badly worn that even new bushes wouldn't fix it. Also, someone had tightened the carb down so hard they'd bent both the carb flange and the and inlet manifold flange that it sits on. I had to file the manifold flange flat before mounting the new carb to get it to seal.
The best trick I found to diagnose the problem was to get our 'dustbuster' hand-held vacuum that has a blow function and attach its flexi-hose to the inlet at the top of the carb with Duck Tape. I set the dustbuster to blow so it pressurised the carb and manifold, then I sprayed a mixture of fairy liquid and water anywhere that air might get sucked in when the engine is running (around the throttle spindle, the carb-to-manifold and manifold-to-head connections and the manifold rubber joints (dual port manifold)).
The air leaks caused big bubbles in the soapy water, so I could see the leaks.
If you can get hold of a vacuum cleaner with a blow setting, give it a try. If you don't have leaks, you can at least rule that out (although you might still have blocked jets in the carb). The good thing is that the engine doesn't need to run to be able to do that test.
The usual trick is to aerosol spray carb cleaner or WD40 around the likely leakage spots which causes the engine to run rough wherever it sucks the aerosol in, but my engine ran so badly that test was inconclusive.

Thanks for that. I'm hoping that it's just blocked up, with all the dust flying about and the fact it's been sat for 18 months (it was well covered up though) anyhow, I'll keep you posted.
Thanks

Well you experts were right. Dizzy was 180 out. Changed plug leads round. Fired up first turn of the key. All timed up and running sweet as a nut.
Thanks again, for all your help.

First of all... Apologies for the lack of posts. It's been non stop trying to get Dave finished for my daughter's wedding on Saturday.
Anyhow, after two years to the day Dave is out of the garage and more importantly has passed his MOT. Never thought I'd see the day
Will update the post in full next week.
Jim
(One very happy person)
