Think they are the thermostat flaps from the bottom of the fan shroud, guess you undid the bolts when you took the fan shroud off, they should stay with the shroud, although it does look like they are controlled a different way on that engone
See the pics on this webpage for what a standard engine should have:-
http://www.awesomepowdercoat.com/thermostat_flaps.html
Not a recommendation for them just some good pics that explain what they are and where they fit, first webpage that appeared when I googled it.
The interesting thing is that the thermostat flaps on the left appear to be attached to the engine.

Righty, we have an update
Last weekend I donned my best shabby chic jeans, and took the engine out of Hector. Also removing heat exchangers.
This is the first I have done this. Difficult to reach bolts took ages to undo. But persistence, and care. Engine is now out, and has gone to new home to help with rebuild

Hi Miles,
You may or may not know this but make sure you don't turn the engine by hand without a distributor fitted because the drive gear can ride up and get jammed causing damage and mashing the brass gear on the crank.
Just thought I'd mention it.
Good luck.

Well I have been gjving the engine bay abit.of a tidy up. I have etch primed, and painted, using rattle cans. One side was fine, but the paint didn't take. So, I have sanded the paint, and primed again.
I will paint tomorrow afternoon.
Keeping my fingers crossed it all goes to plan

This Friday, Gordon and Miles will be trying to fit the engine.
Let's hope we can get it in.

Righty, the engine install has stopped in its tracks
The carb I have is wrong (used to be on a twin-port).
I now have a Single-Port 1600 engine, with inlet exhaust manifold, for a 1300-1600 engine.
I REALLY NEED a good solex carb, which will fit this manifold.
Ideally a German/ Solex 30 pict 2.
I will be at Busfest tomorrow (Sunday). IF you see a carb like this, please post here, or message me.
If anyone want to swap for a NOS exhaust / muffler (1200) - that would be just fine smile emoticon Any help much appreciated.
Thanks
Miles.

Remembering the pictures you PMd when you were looking to buy HTR...which were very good.. and my comments about RHD with US bumpers...that explains it...
You have made a lovely job of finishing touches to this bus...
Interior looks really good now..
Hope you get the little things finished soon and use it..

Time to update my Rides and Projects thread
In January of 2015, I drove to Suffolk, and collected an industrial 1600 engine, which had spent 25 years with the Swiss army. Sold when Army had no need. Bought by me
Got home had to unload on my own. I felt shocking (turned out I was running a temp of 40 degC, and had the start of flu).
Onwards. Yep let's get the engine "slotted in". Erm, no - because cash is tight.
So time to strip down the engine myself.....
Judicious use of the Mrs pyrex. Nice for to be used.
Workbench is not that big. The garage / workshop have been all over the place
Slow progress, as I had to find some original SP tinware, and get it powder coated, and shot blasted.
I work in IT, and people sometimes say I never get my hands dirty I do.
Time to get the old engine out. I have removed an engine before, but single-handedly removed myself :):):)
Loads of OG paint in the engine, but I wanted to treat, freshen up the battery tray, and other side. I've never done paint before.
I cleaned up the surface rust, sanded down the paint, primed....
Time to start etch-priming. This did not go to plan. I had to sand down the first time. But I persevered
