Next step Bob coming up with a big list of panels/bits metal and me going to collect the running gear to prep for powder coating!

Have to say a big thank you to Bob and the restohaus team so far as they have really helped me storing the van for so long and fitting it in around many projects !!!

To be honest, given that sounds like it was an eBay bought blind bus it's not that bad really. Although some of the welding looks a bit like my camel poo oxy-acetylene stuff I did about 28 years ago on my bug
Good luck with it. Be good to watch it progress

Cheers, Lee.

Thanks empi

I did get allot of pictures, but you never know do you.
Was going to just fix bits and have fun with it but want it to be done properly! On the whole it's a fairly solid bus compared to lots of starting points I have seen. Seeing all the holes is a little scary but it's in good hands and will be a good project

I suspect the patch jobs were previous owner as he was main uk owner, first owner just imported it and sold it.

Nice job you've got there, is the gearbox original? Because I was told at a well known vw parts company that if I wanted to replace my 1500 in my 64 caravelle with anything bigger I would have to modify/ grind the bell housing!

You mention new chomoloy flywheel n clutch...So that will be 12v and larger..more teeth..

Stompy
To explain the gearbox comment..
Which you may or may not understand...
OG buses were 6v and had a smaller diameter flywheel/clutch and a smaller starter ring on the outside of the flywheel.
Details can be found out there..
180 mm with lower number of teeth on the starter ring and different sized starter gear and bush in the gearbox face.
When 12v systems were introduced as optional fittings first and 1200cc went to optional 150cc some had 12v systems as well as an option...
So to accommodate the larger flywheel diameter the gearbox bell housing had to be able to take the larger diameter flywheel. Later gearboxes can take larger flywheel.
In the aftermarket we fit larger engines with larger clutch plates and larger flywheels and 12 v systems...
I believe you can still use the smaller flywheel on a larger cc engine but it involves fitting special modified seals and flywheels and drive a 6v starter on 12v..But the starter may fail eventually.
So if you have a 200mm 12v system starter and starter ring fitted and try to fit to a 6v gearbox...The inside of the gearbox bell housing will require relieving.
ThIs can be done in situ...By grinding the bell housing inner face.
Two things to know..
The gearbox casing is made of a magnesium alloy.
Magnesium metal burns.

If you grind it with a grinding wheel free hand make sure you use a new grinding bit....
Not one contaminated with any ferrous material..
A spark from ferrous material can ignite magnesium.
Magnesium burns with an intense white light at a very high temperature.
You cannot put the fire out with water.
In the machine shops I worked in/ ran we machined magnesium and always had buckets of sand by the machines we used for magnesium.. We cut with ferrous metal tooling and had a few fires...One which took a lot to extinguish.

So grinding in situ and trying to get sand onto a gearbox vertical face is hard...
Done on a garage may have serious consequences.

I have read that it is possible to use the larger flywheel and ring to cut its own way into the casing by using starter to turn the flywheel in situ. Never seen or done it.
One difficulty all experience is that larger flywheel may only catch in one place or all round...
So the difficulty is where to relieve.
Try reading a site about VWs on the web there was one called kerbside motors but I cannot find..
Seach converting VWs from 6v to 12v. Off to seek a link....

http://www.vw-resource.com/6volt.html

https://archives.ssvc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?t=91924

https://superbeetle.websitetoolbox.com/ ... volt-95501

Talks about pushing the engine with 12v flywheel starter up to the housing and using the teeth to mark where it needs to be ground..
Lots to read..
