as long as you take up that 150mm evenly front and rear with driveshaft angle it shouldnt be a problem, however i would prefer to go down the longer torque tube route as you no then that thats one less issue you may have caused in terms of geomatry/ cv join wear etc, epic idea for a bus though gona launch like a t*** 8)

After sleeping on it I agree and much prefer extending the torque tube rather than testing the tolerances of uj's!

Started laying out the chassis today. Thankfully the 996 suspension mounting points are only 18mm further out from the original vw chassis rails so will not require too much additional metal work either side of the originals. Front of gearbox will require its own little cut out in the cab floor but looking good so far. The great bonus is that i have a shed load of space between the engine lid and the engine fan as i am not hostage to having to use the original torsion tube.

Next stage is to cut the chassis rails and start tack welding the sub frame together. May even get it square and true!

This thread makes me excited.

What are the body work plans?

Thanks sbk. The plan for the body work is to shot blast it and see what horrors are underneath. Then spend a shedload on cutting disks and tig wire. Want to keep everything above the chassis looking normal.

Perfect plan. :)

Be interesting to see what's under the paint round those rear arches.

As much as i don't like buses being messed with too much something intrigues me about this build and i cant wait to see this monster launch of the lights, if my golf 4motion is anything to go by stuff like this launches perfect leaving more powerful cars for dust, BUILD ON!

Can anyone reccomend a flywheel builder in the UK? Got a bit of an issue linking a 1966 engine to a 1989 gearbox!

Looks like a entertaining build, I also saw your thread over at Pelican Parts.
I like the sub frame rear suspension, I looked into going that direction myself but decided to keep it simple (relatively!).
What are the front plans? I would assume you would use the stock Porsche a.w.d. hubs and fabricate them into a custom A-arm setup.

I have a shortened T-tube in my set up and I think sleeving and making it longer would be even easier, maybe making the outer housing bolt together two part to make install simpler.

I would think that running your smaller 911 engine (though I too love the look of the early carb engines) would cost you more trouble to make work ($) than the 3.6 torque monster.
I still wish I had just went to a 3.6 and I haven't even got it running yet!

Thanks for the link to your thread, will be nicking a couple of engineering solutions from your build no doubt! The front will be 964 pure and simple. I am building a new chassis front to back and bolting the 964 sub frame with wish bones straight on. The same will be done at the back with the 996 sub frame. I will have to get a bespoke torque tube/drive shaft made and the drive shafts will be one off's.

Oh the engine conundrum, i purchased the engine when i was going down the 944t torsion tube/swing arms rear wheel drive only option and when it would have been a great engine for the project. Now, after a certain amount of mission creep, its going to be 4x4 i am not sure. I would need to be able to sell the motor and purchase a 3.6 for the money i make as the piggy bank is showing Empty.

Sounds like a good plan, keep all the smallish bits stock Porsche and the big simple fab stuff custom, trick it into thinking it is still in a 911!
I have not checked out the 964 front suspension but I assumed it was strut based, which puts it about half way thru the front seats, not super comfortable for most.
I understand project creep as I tried to get it all out before I made my final plan, mostly successful except for the dry sump tank, which went full custom, tons of time versus the stock piece, thankfully my fabricator was the instigator and helped out with the build cost, (he was right as usual).

I understand you need to lengthen the torque tube but is it possible to cut it in the middle, sleeve the shaft longer, weld, load the stock bearings on each half of the outer tube and assemble outer in two parts, also machined sleeve to connect (bolt together for bearing/driveshaft access). Sounds confusing but kinda opposite of my build.

Are you going to run the torque tube in a hump in the floor or keep it below stock bus centerline?

My build has alot of the same design problems but different solutions.

Would love to see you start a thread at Pelican Parts in the vw/porsche conversion forum, as you are going to spend a bunch of time there! (its a bit lonely, but a good place to reference for questions to the P.P. board).

Glad to see some one more nutty than me!(makes my build almost rational).
