Dave commented that they had laid the frame out perfectly square and level...and he was now working on getting all the posts in the right place and plane..
Non of them are properly welded in yet.. tacked only having been measured and set before the floor was removed..
Using the doors to set the gaps to the Posts is his next step.
Remember this bus had already been rebuilt a long time ago and since then due to rot or damage has had a lot replaced...
Dave commented... "Does the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil set off a tornado in Texas?" because a small change in one area caused a massive change elsewhere...

So he is refitting all the doors and hatches and setting the gaps and then will continue to weld all the frame up..
Has been enjoying himself..
Working on replacing the rear valence D post triangles and engine side plate to install the second wheel arch...

Hail Lurkio, Senator Ludicrous Sextus here!
Lurkio I must tell you that.
As a Plebian.... You will be a free man and can amass great fortunes..
Far better than being a mere slave......owned by me, working your rocks off for me.... You would have more prospects helping me with my wife Ammonia...assisting my daughter Erotica and keeping my son Nausius in his place
...

The dreaded rust works for years and turns metal to paper... More to replace...

More money to the talented Autocraft to buy more planks to be nailed to the "Ship of Theseus".....
Dave the Master prophesised that the structure depends on strong valence brackets... not those made of paper

So Stu..... Please supply....some

Visited today to examine myself to touch and feel...
Dave has been having fun...
PICTURE HEAVY

The good the bad and the remaining UGLY...

The frame is still tacked in all the vital places BUT the slightest change in one plane creates a lot of play in another..
So all is based on setting the door, hatch and lid gaps.
Because the A B C and D posts still have some position play etc. The whole lot is able to be set

Surprisingly the horizontal long side panel supports were quite good.

Just one section rotted away which Dave has cut out to let a piece in..

Image

David has been working on fabricating the ends of the cable conduit from chassis gauge plate/sheet.
We will be fitting a step so need to ensure the bolts for the step do not crush the conduit snd restrict the passage of the loom.

Image
We will be fitting belly pans with conduits down each side to carry the looms.

The door skins are tacked in place but some areas are missing and the panels are not clinched as yet..

The rot is everywhere...and will take some cutting out..
Around the opening pop out windows both sides..

Image

Image

Image

Surprising how the metal rots in some places and not others...

The NS header rail just behind the B post had sheared and water poured in there for a long while. The roof transplant came with the remains of the outer B post.
The roof was replaced and the inner B post top will require quite a bit of loving to get it back in shape..
This has not been finished yet just tacked to align.

Image

The over engine panel is not too bad..
It has quite a few drilled holes from fitting of interior panels and a few corroded areas.

Image

The rear hatch surround was missing it's lip on one side and the engine hinge panel was quite thin in places...so was to be replaced
Dave has replaced the edges and trial fitted the new Autocraft panel.

Edge of rear panel has a piece let in.

Dent and pull out holes repaired in rear quarter panel

Been to check my ticks with Teacher...
Headmaster Dave confirms my postulating

Early buses = big ticks..
Later buses e.g. 62 take small ticks..
I gathered all my steel and alloy ticks and got them all blasted for Sherry..
They are all small ticks...

Will use the best.. sell the rest..

I know that that Lurkio disciple Steve chose big ticks but he gained his from rusty and found another from..so he has sold his thin tick..

All mine are thin ones...

The Devonette had large rivet holes in the door frame inners and in the inner window surround panels to hold the curtain rails.
Early in its life the NS was accident damaged and front clip lower quarter, cab front floor quarter, dog leg, NS cab door and front cargo door replaced.

Sextus Ludicrous here.....!

Lurkio? Lurkio? ARE YOU READING?
LET US DO A COUNT OF THOSE WHO ARE KEEPING UP...

STOP?

OR

CONTINUE?

Am I writing this Philospher's tome about The Ship of Theseus to record the Anals of History!
That Homer wrote the Iliad.. so he must have had readers..?
I hear the soothsayer says..

"Your story will in time be eclipsed by "Only Fools and Horses" and tales of "Trigger's Broom".... " whatever that will be...!

Progress is being made..
Lots of hard work..
Lots of parts blasted and painted

Image

Image

Lots of parts rejected

Image

Battery strap with good end but eaten middle
Engine lid hinge with excessive play.
Sliding window strips and fixed window ends

Good set of door tops out of the two pairs...

Image

Image

Roof came from Graham Clarke and although I thought it expensive at the time.... turned out well.
Now they arr twice the price and almost unobtainium..

Was from a wide hatch.. LHD ..
So interesting work to swap

Had some interesting extra holes for a roof rack.

Keep or fill?

Worst part to solve is the swage under the windows on the long side...
What to do here...?
Badly rusted pitted and holes in the flange and along the panel.

Posted wanted and technical question about repro or body cuts....

More pictures from my visit.
Details which caught my eye.

The crumbling A post rot had spread down to the dash and rotted the cable run hole edge.

Image

The threaded retainer plate in the B post after the rot around it was repaired.

Image

The edge of the sloping panel between the cargo area to rear wheel arch still in the throes of being aligned before plug welding.

Image

The fuel filler area and overflow pipe.

Note to self...
Remember to check it is free before final build up and paint

Image

Lots of small things to do...

I was worried when I got to have a very detailed check over this bus that it might have been cloned... but all numbers matched. Engine was one year later.

There were so many replacement parts fitted around 1964 including a lot of VW original spare panels with VW labels on the back and a replacement engine..

I wondered how big the accident it was involved in....

Most of the NS from edge of front clip to the rear upper short panel had been replaced.
Matt said it was quite helpful to be able to strip down..

Just drill out 300 pop rivets and start from there.
Already had all the drill holes for plug welding on reassembly..
Still will be nice when finished.

Update time...
Image

Had a very close look at my swage line metal...
From the outer surface yes it looks bad and has bad pitting..

Image

But looking from the inside against the light to spot the pin holes shows the whole swage has pin holes from the middle downwards to the return flange area.
The long side had previously been replaced with a VW OG period spare panel before but the repainting was thin and the swage had corroded.
So this is like the planetarium show with holes very evident...
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

So I think I will have to seek someone to roll my swage for me....

Matt has been busy checking and rechecking the chassis and body alignment and has welded the chassis rails, fitting the chassis reinforcement closing plates and the loom conduit inside the chassis rails from front to back.
We will be fitting belly pans and these replicate the conduits on buses with OG belly pans.
