"Peebles" 1964 Devon Caravette

In summary...

Very pleased....Very very pleased...
I work loosely in Procurement .... In all kinds of areas.... but loosely in Services.
I know only too well that it all depends on defining what you want in a very clear mutually agreed Statement of Requirements. ... Technical work instruction or agreed specification.
I had 90% clear in my mind and some things I assumed were incorrect...so heater boxes and thermostats...Are not something he was used to procuring and fitting usually building hypo engines for use in USA....but I got there in the end.
I now know the level of detail down to which you need to specify when ordering
Also I wanted a bus vintage speed exhaust to go with an autocraft tow bar...
Further detail..
I wanted a remote oil filter and then included AN fittings and braided hose.
So in the end had a clear spec which he built to.
I also wanted shipping into Birmingham. He uses Concordia. .. a company I know well.
Dealing with Chico was a pleasure!
I added 1/8" BSP tap off on the inlet manifold for my remote servo..
I specified dual VDO senders for oil temp and oil pressure and explained I would be fitting a Tacho and a CHT sender.
He made up a mini loom and detachable plugs to allow engine removal.
I organised shipping of the gauges etc to him and he received and onward shipped the whole package.
I would definatly recommend his work.

1964 RHD VW Devon Split Camper (virtually unwelded, low mileage) £8000

I am advertising this on behalf of a friend, who cannot deal with enquiries due to ill health. He would like the van to go to a good home, to someone who will keep it original & standard, & preferably to a SSVC member.

The van is VW Velvet Green lower & pale green top, with a white pop-top. My friend bought it in 1989 when it had covered 85000 miles. It has now covered 106000 miles. The van is 12 volt. The engine is a 1600 recon. twin port, which has covered 20000 miles. The van always passed its MOT first time, and, due to my friend’s ill health, it has not been MOTed since 04/05.

Body
The chassis & underside looks solid. It was originally undersealed & the underseal was kept flexible by numerous coats of Waxyoil over the years. The only panels that have been welded are the sill under the cargo doors & the bottoms of the cargo doors. The bodywork looked near perfect 4 years ago, but surface rust has erupted since. This “surface rust” may need to be cut out & may require some new panels for a professional restoration. The areas that are rusty are:
LHS headlight bottom
LHS front door bottom
LHS & RHS quarter lights
Front gutter
Bottom of windscreens
All wheel arches need attention
LHS sill
Bottom of rear hatch door & some of the surround
Both pop out windows
Battery tray & corresponding corner on LHS
The only hole in the bodywork is on the RHS rear wheel arch, adjoining the sill.
The front doors will not open, probably due to seized locks

Mechanics
Everything is original apart from the recon. engine.
The engine cannot be started as the starter motor does not work. The engine always used to start first time.
The 4th gear sometimes jumps out of gear when accelerating hard.

Extras
The van comes complete with an awning in good condition.
The Devon conversion is all original & complete
The pop-up roof is water tight.

This van is a wee gem. It deserves a good home.
It is very rare to find a 45 year old original vehicle with a low mileage & mostly original metal & mechanics.
The van is located 25 miles from Edinburgh.

Chico is very good at supplying pictures.
He requested 50%deposit and gave a build start date which he kept to...
I organised some parts brackets to go to gauge maker and gauges to go to chico..He sourced dual senders etc..

Note the barbed oil pipe outlet and inlet changed after discussion to AN fittings...

Image

Plugs are smaller thread diameter non standard longer reach ones...

Image

Image

Not the final exhaust....but now with AN fittings and braided hose

Image

Heat exchangers repro and repro German black painted tinware which is the best quality I have seen...
I did have to ask to ensure all the full set was fitted with the thermostat and flaps. .
Something he does not normally fit..

As requested Chico drilled and taped the inlet manifold and fitted a white plastic take off elbow to fill the hole. This was sealed with black electricians tape to allow the dyno test. I did however have the hole ready to be used to fit the remote servo from vwjim.
The servo hose ran all the way through inside the belly pan space. ..

Thermostat and tinware. ..check

Image

Dyno run to break in..
Designed as a torque motor to pull my camper. .95bhp at flywheel was the planned spec..achieved 90+ bhp.
Video and dyno curves supplied.
Completed crated.
Phoned on the Friday to say collected by shipper
Cleared customs on the Monday phoned at my desk by Concordia... to pay the import duty and VAT on engine parts shipment ..painful. .
Delivered Tuesday and uncrated

Image

Would I do again. ..??
Yes I will.
My spec worked...
I got what I ordered...
Left it too long before finishing the interior..my work at snails pace..LOL

If I was at all critical it would only be that I was surprised at the items he does not normally fit, but it does come back to my procurement mantra. .assume nothing...the point of having a clear specification is that it spells out what you are contracted to buy..
Then there can be no argument when you either do not get it or do not get what you wanted.
Aniball is very good to work with and very good at replying.
I know others were surprised that he did not fit parts but as I tried to explain they did not ask for them.
There were minor parts not fitted like the seals round the hoses through the front apron.

I had however already ordered the engine tinware seal components from WCM so I had the seals and fitted those around the fan housing to front tinware apron and fitted the rubber drain piece to the bottom of the oil filler alternator stand.
Because I was using a standard oil filler rather than some of the very nice machined billet ones I have a drain pipe with rubber valve teat and had an open vented top which would be attached to the oil mist hose going to the standard oil bath air filter.
I looked for a cheap 13mm motorcycle paper gauze air filter in black without success so I fitted a silicon black 45 degree hose and blackish reddish cheap filter.
I was advised by Chico with my set up and his oil pump filter breathing set up I should not suffer misting.
No issues so far.
I wanted to try to maintain a fairly standard look and feel in black and silver. He sourced a black Bosch 12v coil and mounted that horizontal on the engine long black out of the way. This allowed the CSP linkage to be midway down the tower each side...snd the cable run to be fairly straight.

As you will see the CSP weber linkage was lowered to the middle position to get the cable run to the operating line very neatly a straight pull.
The weber flap return springs are quite weak with such a long accelerator cable run on a bus...
Chico fitted a functional bracket and standard accelerator return spring on the LH carb.
I tried to buy some neat aftermarket springs with fingers which fit on the shafts only to find they are no longer available. I posted a thread on here and the samba.com and corresponded with the stockist who used to supply them only to get... Too expensive to make...No market...Did not sell when we had them. .
But strange they had sold out..
If I could find one I would get a company I did some work for in Redditch to make a batch!
Anyway in the end Matt made a pair of similar matching brackets and used standard external accelerator springs..
May not look too pretty but it works..
May wear the spindles. ..We will see.
I also fitted the return spring under the pedal after lots of puzzling about where it fits and fitted a karl_f throttle roller and an Empi braided accelerator cable..
The flaps close and I now like the accelerator pedal feel..
Matt used the cable and plug set and re run the cables tidied them up and enclosed them in some nice cable trunking.

Image

As he said all he did was pretty the engine up.
He builds and runs drag cars and his installs are amazing. .
He was impressed.

Cheers Andy..
I have around 1000 photographs of the bus in OG state and resto stages.
I keep finding them and adding them..
I would like to acknowledge all the help that countless other threads have given me.. I am humbled that so many offer help and so I try to do the same!
Tonight I sent a photo to the forum member who originally loaded the For Sale advert and he has replied..

I still have a few things to do and bits to fit..
Boyden has promised me a couple of bits which I am missing or are broken..
Rippers has a mug for me..
LOL.
I am still considering my pop top hole solution...
Want a 35mm PVC hockey stick source..
Bought some touch up paint and immediately took a big gouge out of the wheel tub to use it on..
Oops..
I am now going to work on the Fire Truck...
Again with Dave's help..
I feel another thread coming up!

Now the great debate is which racks to fit..
I have a three bar one made for a CP... I was told..
These were also fitted to Bay window buses.
I also have a rear rack modelled on the front...but this is in slightly heavier gauge tube and slightly larger OD.
These were made to carry a canoe on the roof. Over the top of the CP pop top.

PO made some ingenious infill bars with pieces of alloy tube and 15mm plumbing brackets (to hold water pipe to the wall)

Image

Or to fit to the OG Dormobile four bar rack bought from a kind poster on this forum a couple of years ago.

Image

You will note that there are no clamps shown.
I bought four clamps and I already have some home made clamps.
