Is there a NZ vw forum you can join? I think there is a good one out there. I see the term CKD (Complete Knock Down) used a lot for Australian buses, but I am not 100% sure exactly what it means. I thought they would have stopped CKD production when the Clayton factory was up and running in the late 50s, but it appears to continue right through the split van production. I assume your bus was imported from Australia? Interesting research ahead for you I think! Keep us posted.

Got rather excited recently when I spotted another Boronia Brown bus for sale! It was duly added to the 'register', but looking back I see it was already listed
Getting hard to find examples of these, I only have 12 on the register!

Well, been toying with the idea for a long while now. I love my little 30hp motor to bits. It's absolutely smashing, especially since the rebuild with Andy, 20,000+ ish miles ago already. Does everything it was designed to do and more. Will chug along at 50mph all day, doesn't overheat or drink oil, returns at least 29 to the gallon, as per the manual, and that's usually with a bloody great big roof tent up top as well.
But boy is going up hills a drag ... Has never bothered me, I like life in the slow lane, but any hill knocks the stuffing out of it. Not helped by having poor compression on one cylinder. And getting spares is getting increasingly difficult, with consumables like dizzy, points, rotor twice as expensive as later engine parts ...

So ... I'd quite like to see what the Kombi would be like with slightly longer legs ... and for the stock nazi in me that means stock late model running gear. At the end of 2012 I picked up a 1500 bus gearbox hub to hub. Cheap, but untested and in bits. I've not checked but I'm hoping it's a big nut.
Next up was an engine - 1500 of course. I was tentatively looking, but didn't have big bucks to spend, and a few slipped through my fingers. After the house move I put it on hold as I didn't have any spare cash at all.

Then in steps BJ1 on here, who knew my predicament and had been keeping an eye out for me. He knew what I was after, and had found an ideal candidate. It was a non runner, but he thought he could fix it, if I was interested? I have known Brian for a few years now and have always been in awe of his years of VW knowledge and experience. Yes, of course I was interested! I just needed to stump up a small amount to cover the cost of parts involved, and I had to sell our faithful old roof tent to cover this, but this would get the overhaul moving in the right direction again!

The block appeared to be fine, but the heads and B&P's were not, so Brian replaced these with a 1600 set he had. Good heads were put on with new exhaust valves. Brian also included a 12v generator, dizzy, manifold, like new 30/31 carb ... I was a very happy customer!

We picked this up on the way back from Johnny K's in North Devon at the weekend.

So now the fun begins, as I search out the rest of the parts I need. I'll go through it all at the weekend and start a list ... I only have old 30hp and 6volt parts here!
(Just tonight I've been offered a lot of the tinware I need. Original but rusty. I'm hoping it will be OK after a blast)

So this turns into a project thread again, nearly 10 years after it started ....

I know what you mean Mike. I loved my 30 horse in the 57, but with a top comfy speed of just under 50, driving on the motorway was no fun. Especially with overzealous national express.

Buying a later bus, with a bigger engine was the key.

Just got to fix the engine, stop it drinking oil like it was going out of fashion..... :)

I'm quite happy sitting at 50 all day Miles, doesn't bother me at all. I must have a hidden steak of 'awkward b*stard' in me that loves holding the rat race up while it tries to zoom past in its metallic German 90mph motorway cruisers ... Maybe I'm more of a cyclist than a driver? :? And in all those miles I've never had any road rage from anyone, and that includes lorry drivers. Nope, I'm quite happy seeing the world go by at 50mph.
Struggling up hills though is a drag, with it loaded up for camping. And the cost of spares is annoying when compared to post 1960 bits. Those are the main reasons. I want a bit more power up hills, good fuel economy, 12v, and easy and cheap spares.

Just dug around in the box of bits to see what I had in the way of running gear ... I had guessed from memory it was a big nut job, but I was wrong, it's a 36mm. Gearbox is an 'H' number though ... Anyone care to enlighten me exactly what I have here?

1967 stock bus would be the ideal ... 1500, tall gears, 12v. Has everything you need really. Breaks my heart when I hear people pulling all that lovely kit out to straight axle them

Mike, the only difficult bit about the whole swap could be your nose cone mount. Just have a look underneath and see if the nose cone mount currently looks like a donut or like flat plate with a square rubber section.

If its the later flat plate with a square rubber section type then the pre-63 gearbox you've got will go straight in once you've fitted a nose cone to it.

If you have the earlier type, then there's an adapter kit that you can get that does the job to allow the later nose cone fitting.

Cheers Jim. I have the original split case transmission with the rubber donut front mount. Brian sent me this link for that adapter you mention >
http://www.machine7.com/product.php?xPr ... &xSec=2576

Also need to look into flywheels ... I'm pretty sure unless I have a special 12v 1967 only gearbox, I will need to either fit a 6v flywheel, or trim a 6v gearbox to clear a 12v flywheel.

After mentioning on here I was really after a large hub nut transmission, not small nut, I have been offered a 1965 one, hub nut to hub nut! (Cheers for the tip off Ben! And thanks Will  )
So, the small nut 1500 box above is up for grabs. I paid £60 for it. Open to offers. I got it disassembled in boxes so no idea what it's like.
