I have not checked out the 964 front suspension but I assumed it was strut based, which puts it about half way thru the front seats, not super comfortable for most.
I understand project creep as I tried to get it all out before I made my final plan, mostly successful except for the dry sump tank, which went full custom, tons of time versus the stock piece, thankfully my fabricator was the instigator and helped out with the build cost, (he was right as usual).

I understand you need to lengthen the torque tube but is it possible to cut it in the middle, sleeve the shaft longer, weld, load the stock bearings on each half of the outer tube and assemble outer in two parts, also machined sleeve to connect (bolt together for bearing/driveshaft access). Sounds confusing but kinda opposite of my build.

Are you going to run the torque tube in a hump in the floor or keep it below stock bus centerline?

My build has alot of the same design problems but different solutions.

Would love to see you start a thread at Pelican Parts in the vw/porsche conversion forum, as you are going to spend a bunch of time there! (its a bit lonely, but a good place to reference for questions to the P.P. board).

Glad to see some one more nutty than me!(makes my build almost rational).

Stephen

Hey Stephen, yep pretty much the same idea i have for the torque tube. if i can utilise as much german engineering as possible it reduces the project being reliant on hampshire engineering!

Going to run the tube under the floor so it will not effect the floor plan. It does mean that it will never be slammed but why would you build an AWD and then slam it???? Flat, smooth tarmac aint that slippy!

Thread now up and running over at Pelican in the VW/porsche forum.

Good to see another Porsche bus in the making! Not sure where you are based, but the guy doing mine (3.2 engine with 915 box / arms / tube from an '86) knows a thing or two about fitting porsche engines into VWs as he has done quite a few now. He was happy to talk me through his methods and show me loads of photos of past work even when the work was being done elsewhere (is now with him as he has the relevent experience to get it done).

Have not seen you mention chassis strengthening at all, for mine he has welded bent pipe through from the torsion tube to the rear of the chassis members and then plated to close and also added additional strengthening between the chassis rails under the main floor. WOrth considering if you think you will end up with a 200hp+ 3l+ engine in the future.

Don't under estimate the electricary side of it either, I'll be running 911 dials with a custom made wiring loom.

Would be good to talk to someone who has already made some of the mistakes I am very likely about to make!

The chassis will be completely rebuilt from front to back and will have strengthening built in to stop it twisting itself to death.

The engine issue is still bugging me and i am very close to selling the 2.0L (although it is such a great looking engine with the triple webers) and buying a 3.6 motor. Really not sure. If its the 2.0L then i only require 2 more wires running in my new loom (tacho and oil temp) which i will get made. If its the 3.6 route then thats a different story and its a whole heap of electric jiggery pokery.

Nice choice, is what I am putting on mine (although standard silver). What size did you go for? I have 17s (reps) for mine as the 18s I have in the garage were too big (unless you buy 2 pairs of 7.5J fronts). That is based on the torsion tube / arms etc. from an '86 911. 17s also meant I got a bit more rubber and less wheel which is not a bad thing on a camper.

The 3.6 swap into early 911's is a popular choice, the early carbed 911 are not much more complex as a split bus.
I am sure you have been searching the Pelican sight for swap info, but here is a link that might be helpful http://instant-g.com/Products/36Conversion/index.html
I agree the appearance of the later engines is not great but you can clean-up alot of the clutter by omitting the hoses and fans and wiring bits not needed for the basic engine function.
Most of the wiring complexity is contained in the stock engine harness, I am presently working on my 3.2 electrical and not so scary with all the info available online.

1623mm is the magic number! No messing with the bus dimensions.

Next problem......anyone got a used 3.6 motor and anyone want a surplus to requirement 1965 2.0L 911 engine and gearbox???????????

Generally because people like the stretched tyre look. No matter how good it looks its actually very dangerous.
