AWD 964/911 Bus

it's not only dangerous but you place all of your nice shiny new rim out in the open ready to be kissed by every curb. I'd look at some more with a rim protector on them. on the plus side, you could sell them for a bit :)
my old 944 had 285's on the back, wonder if they are the same as this?

So started fabricating the chassis today. Had to lose 170mm from the rear track and that meant making a new cross member and keeping it all square and true.

Decided to make a simple jig and tack weld the parts together before offering up to the rear sub frame.

You mean dauntingly torque-tastic!
With all the effort going into your build you will have a engine that will give you the proper push to make it worth it.
Good choice, fab on.

With my shell away Could someone please tell me what the distance is from the centre of the rear drive shaft flange to the inside of the engine lid?

Spent the weekend making a dolly so i can move the engine and gearbox around the garage and get it into the right position to offer up the rear sub frame. At the point now where i can start to see how the chassis rails will fit to the sub frame and wrap around/over the engine.

Last photo shows the torque tube which is 150mm too short so some head scratching to be done.

Good news this week as i worked out that i can spin the 964 hyd steering unit through 90% and refit it to the subframe so that the splined shaft points forward and not up. This will allow me to use the 964 steering rack powered by the hyd unit on the 996 motor.

Image
The steering rack at the bottom of the picture is the original 964 position and the rack at the top (with the tie wraps) is the new position for the bus.

This last photo shows the torque tube flange which i have ground off. Will now fabricate a sleeve to extend tube by 150mm. Will require a splined shaft extension aswell.

have been really lucky with the dimensions and being able to spin the steering rack 90 degrees. its definitely feeling very doable now.

What do u do to counteract the extra weight in the back for a handling point of view...will it pose an issue?

not so much an issue as a consideration. The 996 weighs 200kg and the original flat 4 about 100kg so straight away the good old law of moments has 100kg extra hanging out the back. Add to this that i am removing the front torsion system which alone must weigh several tonnes (80kg) then the C of G may end up some where behind the bus! I do have the torque tube and front diff to counter this but in reality this will just replace the torsion stuff as a moment.

I have started to do the datum figures and will post them when finished but i am not adverse to adding some weight up front to bring the C of G to a sensible position. With 300bhp on tap extra weight wont be a problem.

The other element of all of this is that it is a VW camper and will be used for family holidays so it does not need porsche style handling but that said would be nice for the back end to stay behind the front in corners.

Now I'm no physicist...but I did see a top gear where Jeremy strapped a bull to the roof of his car. Granted it's not directly over the front wheels but surely this couldn't hurt?!??

Trouble is it gets complicated with the math around rate of decay and shifting C of G.
