Also see a thread I posted about mine - I took it all apart to clean it & ended up repairing a broken needle.....

https://archives.ssvc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=99767&p=763027&hilit=speedo#p763027

After I had refitted it a week or so later after the cleaning, it started doing exactly what you have described, making a horrific noise and the needle jumping about.
This is caused by the speedo drive head where the cable goes in getting seized, but the speedo cable just keeps driving it, building up tension in the speedo cable, until it suddenly gives way and the speedo whips round making a nasty noise.

When I removed the speedo again I tried a matchstick in the drive and it was really tight, it chewed the matchstick up! I took it apart but couldn't find anything broken, so I just fed some light oil (it was out of a spraycan so lighter than 3in1) down the speedo shaft where the cable attaches, trying to feed the oil in, it takes a while as its like a collet in a tube, but eventually it suddenly freed up, and I could spin it very easily by hand with the matchstick, put it all back together and its been perfect ever since

Thanks for that Miles and Ted!
Ted, your rebuild guide looks fantastic! I think I'll give that a try, and get a new needle from Peter Banks if he still makes them.

Hopefully my speedo is salvageable, the needle broke about 4 times so I think that is FUBAR but if I can get it spinning again, I'll be a happy boy :)
Appreciate you letting me know about the matchstick drive too! Brilliant idea.

I've been doing a lot of work on the bus over the past month, and it has paid off as I've got a nice new 12 months MOT!
Unfortunately my stock exhaust was rotten, so to get me through the MOT I've fitted a second hand Twin Tip GT.

The plan is to save up a little bit of money and sort a Vintage Speed tuck away.
It had always been my intention to run a stock late 1600cc engine, with little pea shooter exhaust, but I'm thinking the stainless VS is a better long term solution.

Is this the sort of height I can expect the muffler to sit?

As I'm quite low I Really don't want to be scraping an expensive stainless system, which is part of the reason I sold my first exhaust.

Hi Jamie,

Hope all is well?

Are you thinking of going for the VS for the stainless option or to help cater for future modifications?

If its just for the stainless route have you thought about a stainless stock style option?

Or, how about a stainless quite pack option?

Stainless steel runs hot, be careful. :D

Thanks to MarkP I've now got a fantastic stainless stock exhaust for the bus! What an absolute gent!
Really getting close to how I want it; needs to go lower and I want to tidy the interior up.
Huge thanks to Type21f who has sorted me out with some awesome Duracour cushions for the back. Next the plan is to get some Salt & Pepper seat covers for my front seats. On the lookout for some reasonable priced ones, if anybody has any? I'll be hopefully getting the door shuts and headlight bowls all sprayed to match the rest of the bus, so that it's more in tune with the rest of the bus.

Here are a couple of photos taken a couple of weeks back:

All is good thanks mate :)
Yea fitted the exhaust the day after I collected it from MarkP :D

That was my 5th exhaust on the bus in 3 weeks  - A combination of knackered ones, ones that were too low, and one which meant I couldn't run a bumper, then Mark sorted me out with the stainless stock! Absolutely fantastic now.

It is fitted in the above photos, and is nice and discreet - Love it, not loud at all and tucks away nicely. Has a fair bit of an angle on it, pointing downwards - Initially had it fitted along with my Fuchs (175/65 rear tyres) but it hit the floor a couple of times; immediately knew I had to go back to my teledials on their chunky 205/65s.

So I've pretty much gone through the process of tidying the cab area up over the past week.
There are still a few bits that need attention, but I'm very pleased so far!

Started out with the matte brown paint on all the headlight bowls, centre pillar and heater vents. Door shuts were all still the same brown, which was really rubbish when the exterior was blue.
It made it a really drab place to be, with mismatched paint on the dash and a rusty parcel shelf.

So I have spruced it all up, with some blue/white colour matched at NRP. Also got some silver white for the handbrake, column and gear stick.

Cheers G!

Interior panels all reattached using lots of clips/screws supplied by yourself of course :)
Prior to that, the front kick panels were being held on with 2 screws each haha.

Next plans are to get some TMI covers for the front seats in Salt & Pepper style.
Also on the lookout for some of the grey material to fabricate the bottoms of the original door cards.

EDIT: Oh yea, and forgot to mention - Prior to the spruce up I had paint stripped the dash back to original paint so there was only minimal paint needed on the dash - The paint I've added to it hasn't come out perfectly, but it's a start and the colour match is absolutely spot on so it doesn't catch your eye any longer.

I was lucky in that I made several errors in buying TMI new but not fitted single covers in the wrong shades...
But I did manage to pair them up in sets and pass them on to others who have them fitted and are happy with them...
In the end I was lucky and bought a set of covers from Bobley in the correct shade and configuration.
There are often odd covers for sale on here.
There is a Dutch site with advice on fitting them yourself.
If the original cocoa hair pads are in good condition they can be re-used...

Shout if you want more clips and screws...etc...

Was just looking at your bottoms (oo er) thinking I have some grey bits that would help. I know I have a section of new TMI grey vinyl, but it doesn't match the patina of the OG panels. I have some OG grey bits pulled off a long panel I think will go, will dig them out for you over the weekend. If I forget, remind me ;)

I also need some TMI seat covers in salt n pepper myself. I'm off to California next month for a conference, was planning on having Wolfsburg West deliver a set to the hotel and stuffing them in my bag. Welcome to join, be about £160 I reckon.

My price for all this? Some clips and screws from Graham ;)

How is it all coming on? have you done any more?

I am going to be sorting my new and old fixings to put them in some nice new fixings boxes I have bought..
For Pebbles I took out the OG interior fixings and some of them were so rusty that the threads had diasappeared,,
Bit by bit I have found Stainless equivalent replacements...and then fitted them to Peebles..
Tried to buy solutions to problems but in the end have reused some brass screws and some of the black japanned slotted wood screws.
I live near to a family run nice old hardware shop so when I get Pebbles home I will be taking out some screws and replacing them...

Sorting fixings for "our" next project...
