Ta.. Well it was brought back, now fully in bits again :( Image
Probably a good thing though as I knew there was a lot of gunk that I couldn't get to so can now fully clean and paint above the gear box, must have been due to a lot of off roading assuming it was used to repair tractors in middle of fields etc Image

Anyway I have a spare gearbox that I was told was ok when I brought it ... Anyone know any basic checks I can do to test it before I put it in ? Or is it just a case of put it in and hope for the best !?

So I've put another gearbox in (unknown) and it's exactly the same !! I'm now thinking it's something to do with gear selector , can 4th not engaging properly cause it it whine / grumble ? Or maybe the hockey stick has an issue as I swapped this between boxes . Will be happy but gutted if it is just selector !

Well if it is just the selector, at least your bus will be 20mph faster after losing all the weight of that soil :-)

Hows this thing going? Managed to put some miles on it yet?? Absolutely loved watching this build and your dedication to maintaining its patina.

Cheers leroy, just waiting in the reg documents to come back from DVLA. I have put a 2nd gearbox in since the mot but other than that I have not done a great deal. Hoping to get reg sorted mid week so will get some action next weekend hopefully

Well a slight update... I have had to resend the reg docs back to DVLA as I made a mistake on the form grr. in the meantime I have fitted a servo and the brakes are massively improved ! I haven't driven it on the road since but from what I can tell I don't think I will be fitting disk brakes ever again, my other bus has CSP disks and then I added the servo later, it seems the servo is all that is really required as the thing stops like you wouldn't believe now on the standard drums. Just got to tidy up the brake pipes and add a few fixings and hopefully the reg number will be here .. I am itching to get out in it now, fingers crossed for the weekend.

Snap....my friend had csp discs and didn't notice much difference but put vw jim servo on and it made all the difference. I run drums and a vw jim servo and I'm more than happy with my brakes.

Re the gearbox...have you tried putting it in 4th on the gearstick then getting underneath to see if the nosecone end really is in 4th....it's quite a definite thing as it changes at the gearbox end...if you disconnect the gearstick and grab the rod and change gears by hand you can see how far the nosecone stick should move in and out to select the gear, if this movement isn't mirrored when changed with the stick then there is your problem.

Yeh I tried that one the other day, ta, when it was in fourth I tried disconnecting and seeing if it would move any further. The new box doesn't jump out of fourth so going to roll it like that for a while and rebuild the original with a longer fourth gear as it's currently 50mph flat out

Cool. Mine is whiny in 3rd and 4th but I guess we have to remember that these gearboxes are all 50+ years old, so it's perfectly possible to buy two or three and them all to have the same problems.

I'm going to run mine as it is like you and lookout for a rebuilt one.

Least I'm not on my own then ;) in just spoilt with my other one I think as that's silent, that's also irs so there is a certain amount of reduction box noise added to the equation with this one , also no interior which makes a big difference to noise

Very true...after 50 quids worth of silent coat mat over the parcel shelf and firewall, the edge has been taken off the noise from the gearbox.

I guess you have small nut transmission?. Mine is a big nut and I can cruise at 55 and could hit 60 if I was feeling suicidal...
I think the small nut ones were made for the 12-1500 cc engines with lower top speed?..although I'm not an expert.

No I'm not up to speed really either, it's a 36mm nut , I have put a 12v flywheel in which is bigger so guess that works out lower ratio also

36 mm is a small nut. Don't think the flywheel makes any difference as that's just the starter motor gearing?

You can pick up a big nut trams for peanuts now as everyone is going irs. You should try reduction boxes and a big nut trans. In my opinion it's a nicer torquey drive so long as speed isn't your thing..I don't really change out of fourth unless it's a really steep hill!

Yeh thinking about it the flywheel won't make a difference. Cheers I will keep my eye out for a decent one, will be nice to get one I can see in action before its stripped
