Today's headache

Removing the roof skin for the old metal.

Gutters are pitted to hell so no chance of finding any of the spot welds, only way now is to work from the inside while trying to save the window sections.

So!

Here's the roof, you can see in the centre where the air box has been hacked in

After a quick clean up of the gutters it became clear that we could not drill the spot welds from the top side due to the amount of pitting.

Then we started on the side sections

We need the window sections to fix and reinstall back on to the bus

Slightly hampered by the old welding

The roof is made up of 4 sections

Roof skin
Roof cross supports/bracing
Side support
Gutters

Plus you have other bits spot welded to the gutter

So after a few hours of cutting/drilling and grinding we got most of the metal off and almost one side cleaned up ready for new metal.

Image

The support frame is spot welded to the cross braces and the roof skin edge, the the gutter is spot welded on (I'm doing this upside down remember as I'm not removing the cross bracing from the skin)

Dave has BINDAIR DUNDAT fitting roof to Sherry..Fortunately the roof and gutters and pillars we bought were very very sound so we stripped off all of the old gutters from the body and used those on the roof. We left the front cantrail section over the NS on the roof gutters because that was fubared on Sherry.

Looking very good..

I hate roofs on splitscreens!

If I had a few spare coin I would invest in the tooling to make new skins, it'll save hours of work on most projects.

Sadly that'll never happen... So out comes the pin puller and shrinker hammer again and again and...

Mines got several dents in it and I'm not going to try to get them out (although I did have a little dabble with a blow torch)

I'll be leaving that to someone who has a clue!

What ? Why ?

Every restoration is unique to the vehicle and makes the vehicle.

We just get to spend more hours a day on them then home restorations.

Mine's the same, I've tried getting the out but with no luck. I also had loads of holes in the roof which I welded up and this didn't help, as now they won't even pop back out when I push them. I spoke to paint shop and he just told me to leave them and he will sort it out. He didn't seem to think it was much of a problem

Love this post, roughly how many hours would you guess at this stage before it will be ready for filling/paint prep?
