VW TDI converstion

I have noticed a lot of interest in doing a TDi converstion into a split so have decide to do one and will post my finding on this topic

A big thanks goes out to Graham Collridge who already has a 1.9tdi in his split he has been a great help in my research and the email address that he provided.

Regarding bolting the engine to a type 1 gearbox i contacted KEP in the states who provided me with the following email reply.

Our 3600 kit contains a one inch thick cast aluminum adapter plate and 200mm 12
volt flywheel with bolts and t.o. bearing, to fit your type 1 trans. It fits
the diesel and any Rabbit, Golf or Jetta. It normally holds the engine at a 15º
angle but is available at 50º for Vanagons. The kit cost $400. Keep your '67
200mm clutch but you will need our $185 starter motor to crank a diesel.

You should not need a rear engine mount.

MMMM, You should not need a rear engine mount....

I would ignore that one IMHO, as the weight and the torque that this lump would produce would be a bit risky to be mounting on the GBox and the nosecone.

REALLY interested in this though, especially using a later motor.

Yes i was a bit concerned about the last statement aswell, i am going to put in a 1.4 TDi motor 3 cyclinder but still have a rear engine mount

It gives me 75BHP and 144lbs.ft

That should be enough for a split.. :D

Currently looking into radiators at the mo..

Ahhh, sweet engine. Will suit the split right down to the ground.

Is it the Audi lump or the one out of a Lupo?

Looked into the conversion last summer, and the radiator was the only stumbling block that I could see. The coolant system is pressurised or Graham's van, as the rad is lying flat. Perhaps just after the Torsion tubes and mounted on the chassis rails, with a large fan....

It s a 1.4 TDI from a 2001 polo

I am looking at mounting 2 Seat radiators between the chassis rails like graham did they would fit side by side, mount a fan onto them both with an airscoop.

These are some of the web sites that i found so far..
Some are useful some just kept out of interest...

Well I for one know that you do need a rear mount for the motor, my buddy has a 2.0 16v turbo Golf motor in his split and has made his own mount kit using V8 mounts to keep the back stable.......

265whp and tonnes of torque......radiators mounted behind drivers front seat.....

Funny watching his bus on a dyno, it loves to climb off......

There are some standalone management systems, but i think that they are in there infancy, and not really that available.. If I remember the one that I seem was over 1000 euro for the management system.

What about mega squirt? have they got that running on diesels yet? i dont think so...

130 TDI is a monster engine, and would hustle a splitty along very well. The torque would be amazing.

What you doing about the gearing?

Might be worth giving JBS Auto Designs a call in Chesterfield (North Derbyshire) to see if they can help? (01246 455005)

I take both my water pumpers to them (Golf mk3 GTi & mk4 Turbo) as they are a VW performance specialist that carry all sorts of work out from servicing to full engine transplants.

I think that they could even re-map your 130hp to around the 170 mark which is pretty good from a diesel. :D
