Best wishes for a speedy recovery

Regards G

Thanks Graham

the last few days have gone by in a bit of a blur, literally

Not much "doing" going on but plenty of thinking though… and planning.

Gary here for a day tomorrow doing bodywork, so hoping to move things forward a bit more.

Cheers

Thanks Paul

Initial laser welding surgery had held up ok but I got a tear in another spot. I now have a gas bubble in my eye pressing the retina back into position. Will be three weeks or so until that dissipates and in the mean time I get a slowly lowering "spirit level" effect in the eye. It's called a "Vitrectomy" but don't google it if you're squeamish  I can't see much until it goes :( so welding is out for a while…….

Hopefully I will update with some Rusty progress tomorrow

Cheers

As I think I explained..eldest son whom you met wee James is married to a GP...Youngest son is a Registrar Anaesthetist and his wife is doing Hospital medicine at the moment as part of her SHO level training...So we have lots of medical expertise which for me has been very good. ..Go see your doctor...NOW being all the advice I get. .
When I went ouch as I was reading your initial post...I got quite an input into what why when how etc...and the assembled body of comment was see how it goes. ..
My friends wife just sneezed. ..enough to damage her eye..
Prognosis is good nowadays. ..
No lying in a darkened room for six months. .
I will brush up the spreadsheet and you can review that with the one good eye and ponder about the enormity of what is still to be done...
I am playing at doing a Frankeneasco inverter at the moment..for Sherry..
Cannot wait for SWMBO to ask why I am watching YouTube about blocking diodes v transistors. ..

:bounce: Evening all :bounce:

Another day done. Gary's been here, working hard, and I've been keeping an eye on him

There's not a great deal to show - filler work is like that, but here's what we've been up to……

we did a bit of dent pulling with this tool. It's connected to a little box of tricks that heats up a carbon rod

Image

and used the same kit to do several areas of heat shrinking that needed sorting. Gary took a look at some of my work :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( and immediately slavered the rear door with yet another layer of filler. I'm convinced he's got shares in uPol……. My cargo doors only got 5/10 :? :? :? and lots more instruction on what to do next

Image

after a while I couldn't stand it any more and I got blocking. I've worn goggles all day to be safe with the dust but, to be fair, the only thing they said I shouldn't do was bungee jumping……….and I'm not daft enough to do that anyway  so I carried on, under instruction, on the rear end 8O

Image

and it's getting there  I might soon be ready for the final skim…….. :(

Meanwhile he' been on the other end

Image

whilst doing a little detail work

Image

and roughing out the front end. It's actually not very thick but it looks like we're being sponsored by uPol

Image

At the end of the day it's coming slowly along. Gary's back next week and knows of a fella that's good, and who might also be able to help me for a few days so it's looking more hopeful for paint O' clock. I need to move this project forward now

well done steve

I ofter keep an EYE on people too hehehehehe

The funny thing about filler is must of what you have ends up on the floor as dust so I can see its just a skim thats being left on the bus ..... its the only way to get it flat mate .... e.g. if there are x 3 dent next to each other its better to do one long skim over all the dents rather than x 3 small skims next to each other as this is were Mr wobbly come from ...so you doing it all correct mate so well done ....

exciting to think that PAINT is not to far away

Keep the updates coming Steve

:bounce: Good afternoon :bounce:

I'm not able or capable of doing too much at the moment and I'm also taking it a bit easy, but……. I've done a little and have a question too :D

I had failed badly with my cargo doors :( :( The 5/10 score that Gary gave me isn't the sort of marks I like getting, so I started the build up of filler that he wants me to do. The photo's poor but it's a damn sight more than I can see out of my right eye at the moment

Image

I'll knock that back a bit before slavering on some more :( :(

I used up some of my "Fantastic" filler to fill in the hollows along the long side sill. Gary's been explaining to me that as it's a very creamy filler, if you sand through it, it doesn't "layer up" very well whereas the "Topstop Gold" is a lot harder and if you do sand through to a different layer it don't matter as much. Anyway, this is now to be slavered in "Topstop."

Image

There were a few final low spots on the rear door to bring up to level before we give it the final full skim

Image

I had a hunt around to find the rear door lock and handle. We're wondering about the detail around the lock hole. It made me chuckle that the lock for the hole in the "rear' has "BUM" written on it

Image

Image

Please could someone with a narrow hatch rear door tell me if there's a shoulder around the lock hole or not? I can't remember and it's been filled up with filler  i.e. does the ferrule sit in an indent or not? I don't want to scrape it out only to find it's not there

Image

That's it for a while. I've had a little rest and I'm off to too a little more.

:bounce: "Ello again :bounce:

What I was going on about in the last post is perhaps better explained by the next two photos of door lock holes. You can see the slight indent around them, so does my rear door have the same detail? These are the engine door and a cargo door…….

Image

Image

I seem to remember the rear door being the same, but I'm just checking before I start scraping

The 5/10 score is still annoying me so I knocked the rough edges off the door that I'm doing again (only better)

Image

and I've now ladled another coat on which is ready to go tomorrow, all things being well……. :blackeye: :blackeye: :blackeye:

Image

I was looking at the rear lock and noticed the key number on the barrel. I'd like to have all my locks "keyed alike." This one is 476 EDIT It's not 476, it's 4Z6, which gives me a "Z" code blank and C & C are now cutting one for me

Image

Can anyone tell me if the ignition key for these vehicles was originally the same as the door keys, or was there one for the ignition and another for the doors?

Answers to these questions asap great fully received :D :D :D

Looking good and smooth mate! What are you using for blocks on the wide panels like the rear hatch and long side? The benefit of having a pro work with you definitely shows, even down to what he's told you regarding different types of filler and when to layer them, awesome advice!

Im using a straight edge to roughly gauge the low spots, any other tricks he's taught you, other than guide coats?

As for the shoulders I think they are present on all of the doors as there is a little rubber seal that sits behind the chrome ring the handle goes through, so I would think theres one on the hatch too, its one of those things you never actually notice until someone asks!! Can you see if the edge of the filler is thicker before you start cutting it back?

Great work as usual, and thanks for going to the effort to keep us thread readers happy with updates, even though you must be suffering with that eye. Keep going dude, paint is on the horizon!! (Sounds ominous but its not supposed to! Bit like a Korean codeword for a new weapon! "Send the paint over the horizon!")(Just me then!! :drunken: )
