vanmanjimmer wrote:
Hi guys, well we are all back from our hols, and changes are indeed afoot! Unfortunately Tyler's engine wasn't the right spec for a bus, more of a beetle motor soI bailed on that one, but looks like the Tdi plan is shelved and a nice Type IV turbo motor is on the cards!!
Literally havent touched the van for weeks now, we are putting a log burner in our house ready for Winter so my time has been spent knee deep in brick rubble and soot. Hoping to be back on he van next week though all been well.
Anyone know what kind of power a 6 rib Type 2 bus can handle without beefing the internals up? The Type IV will be putting out a decent amount of torque so need to know wether that needs attention first!
Cheers guys,
Hopefully back to normal next week!
TDI shelved! Shame I was looking forward to seeing that!
I put 300bhp from an Impreza motor through an 091 6 rib without any issues, I didn't ever give it a really hard time from standing start though.
I know Im gutted too in a way but we've had so much abuse about putting it in a 15 window, plus we were always that little bit dubious ourselves.
I think the thought of a Type iv even though that specific one didn't work out, appealed and helped us to go with out hearts rather than our head, my wife has never been convinced to be honest, I just kept on about how practical it would be!!
Type iv on efi with a nice dual map setup should be good though. Not as torquey as a tdi but more in keeping and no slouch either.
Need to have a look at how far ahead you've gotten now with yours, will have a read when Im back home in half an hour!!
Cheers for the headsup on the 091 too, looks like thats the way to go then...

Great shout, not for listening to others' abuse but for going with your heart. If it feels right it probably is.

Well I shall say nothing about how long its been but hey, heres what Ive managed to do...
Since I no longer require the radiator I re-installed the treasure chest base, but with a few internal mods for the twin air tanks, pumps and solenoids for the air ride...
Will paint and seam seal it when all the brackets are finished on the inside.
Then the bellypans, again a lot different as theres no need for air from the front so smooth was the order of the day here. Decided to make them in three as it was easier and then spot weld them when theyre all in. Rivnutted them to the chassis.
The center one bolts to the gearlinkage cover too, its super stiff and strong, really adds stiffness and will hopefully keep most of the grime off my white chassis!
I will add a hood to the steering box just to keep the spray out of it.
The back will be left open to allow the cable through etc.
Then it was time to dry build the suspension bit to make sure it still fits and check clearances etc.
Ground clearance, adequate... I smiled when I took this, man I love low...
And finally...
Few bits to finish then I can get the cab area Gravitexed and Epoxied again and the bellypans detailed! Forward progress at last!!!
Btw its been 2 months!

Thanks mate, I have missed getting up there but its been nice leaving it as its let my head catch up and plan stuff rather than just react. Hence the Type 4 plans...

Bit more on the bellypans today, fitted t'other side with rivnuts etc. Also got the rear one on although Im waiting on the gearbox for that to finish cutting it etc.
Rear...
Also got the rack all modified and fitted up, more ground clearance now and proper Ackerman angles for ride height hopefully!
If you look closely you may have spotted the gear linkage cables are in too.
Just gotta fab a throttle linkage as the tdi was fbw whereas this will be old school cable for which theres no tube or linkage. Then its the handbrake cables and then paint!!!! Yippee then it will be back on its wheels finally for body prep... Getting there, excited about the engine too!
Cheers guys

Hmm a rear belly pan. Interesting. I bought a front one but have been told that it won't fit with Red 9. I might have to borrow some of your ingenuity before I accept that
Looking forward to meeting up for a beer with our buses next year

Epic work going on here. One of the few downsides with the red9 front beam is how low the rack is. You've gone and solved that one. And done it in style.
Well done on the fab work.
Great thread. Great build.

Front one could be made to fit mate, it just needs to go round the bevel box and modifying to fit to the front part of the Red9 plate thats all. Rear one is there as Im using a cable setup for the gear linkage and I wanted to keep the worst of the muck off the linkages to prevent issues in the future.
Definitely looking forward to that beer next year!

Thanks mate, too kind! I think all of the issues are sorted now, the proof will be when we hit the road next year. The front end is a good 2" above where it used to sit with the Red9 kit so it should be fine. The comments keep me going, its a slog sometimes isnt it!!

Couple of piccies of the parts Ive acquired over the past week!
Had some helpful advice from a few people via PM's etc which has been much appreciated, you know who you are, thanks, and have had a convo on Shoptalk with Walter via PM too so hes given me a solid direction with the engine build, to the point where Ive bought the engine, a huuuuge turbo, and a nice DK code 091 box which will be getting a 1.2 third and 0.7 fourth gear kit for a super strong cruiser.
Engine is a solid Aussie import 2.0 with the open breather, only need the case and the crank so will sell the rest of the bits to fund more goodies.
Gearbox is as described above.
Even Wally got excited about this, he ran one in his white bug a while back, twin scroll, 56mm compressor wheel, 0.76 AR, apparently "its perfect for an aircooled motor and I wont be disappointed" his exact words.
Next up is the exhaust, rods, and some stainless tube so I can roughly work out where its all going!
Has anyone got a 911 fan lying around btw?!? Need one!!!!
Cheers guys.

Make sure you get a 911 fan and alternator not a 964 or later one as they will not fit as they are far too large for nearly all the fanshrouds - although Wally did say a company in Germany were now making a 964 shroud

Yeah, spotted a few 964 shrouds on eBay but know they are too big, unless I make a horizontal setup as one of the other guys did, but trying to save extra work so am looking for an early 911 one, cheers.
Thanks for the other help too, I didnt ignore it, just spoke honestly to Wally about everything and he allayed my fears, and persuaded me that Type 4 with a turbo is the way to go providing I'm patient and spend the money in the right places. We shall see!
Thanks

Turbo type 4 will be much better than NA with throttle bodies!
Wally is very helpful, definitely take his advice.
